2. I feel like there are enough wealthy alumni and general Diocese supporters that fundraising may not be too much of an issue. Additionally, the diocese would probably finance some of the project.

3. The current school was built in 1959 at 5959 Broadway and their mascot is the "59er"...would they change their mascot if they moved from that location?

4. Andrean is definitely in need of upgraded a major upgrade...like very major...and it would be easier to start from scratch at a new location than to try to overhaul on the same site (unless they were to demolish and rebuild on the same site while temporarily housing elsewhere.

5. If anyone thinks that the change in demographics from almost exclusively White to almost 50% White has absolutely nothing to do with the decrease in enrollment and the decrease in perceived exclusivity of Andrean, they have their head in the sand. Yes, there are other factors such as affordability (for families that do not qualify for the voucher) but there are other factors. Andrean definitely has some issues with micro-aggressions that have increased as the minority population increased at the school especially as the largest minority population at the school by far is Black. Additionally, most of the Black population at Andrean were not within walking distance to the school and now, most of the kids that are walking to school are Black. If nothing else, this is also a reflection of the demographic change in the area and the perception of people driving by the school when it is let out may be that the school is predominantly Black/minority. I am almost certain that the Diocese is thinking about this perception as they evaluate the possibility of moving to a new location.

6. There are some parents whom broke tradition of sending their children to Andrean due to its location in Merrillville. If they moved south of 30 closer to 93rd but still in Merrillville, it would probably be more acceptable for many people but then again, for how long? The Diocese of Gary has been headquartered at 92nd and Broadway for years now. If the school does move, where in CP would they move to? Most likely along the Broadway corridor in a visible area in between 93rd and 109th. I could see the school located off the northwest corner of 101st (Center Ross Rd) & Broadway or near the Diocese off 93rd and Broadway where the Diocese is.

Overall, I really think this is a matter of "when" and not "if" they will move. The building is an issue, but the location is an even bigger issue.
If they move to CP, it would be off the exit of I-65 and 231. Diocese already owns land there.

Solid find! I really enjoyed reading this from 12 years ago! Goes to show you how long some of these things actually take, but at the same time cool to see the foreshadows looking back.

Default Update

Just now seeing this:

Bishop: Andrean High School to stay in Merrillville

Not sure why a follow-up story wasn't produced by The Times as well. Anyway, we will see longterm how this goes. Andrean's population has declined and although the Catholic education is the main reason for kids being sent to that school, the surrounding community does play a role as well as the physical condition of the building and grounds. In the coming years, Andrean may find that if thing do not improve then they might have to close or might have to make some modifications (like lower/freeze tuition if even possible).

Default New Franciscan Health Hospital Open - Will Andrean follow soon?

The new hospital is open off of 231 & 65 and more residential and commercial development is soon to follow (first on the western side of 65 with Canvas at Crown Point and The Willows). Now, I wonder if we can expect a new Andrean HS within the next 5-7 years? For some reason, I have a gut feeling that the Diocese of Gary will receive a sizable donation from the Dean & Barbara White foundation specifically for building a new HS. They have made massize donations within the past few years so I could see it happening! Also, I wonder if in addition to Andrean, the diocese would consider building any K-8 private school on/near the new Andrean site?

Also, yes, 7 years later and still regret misspelling the forum title lol

Default Andrean High School to remain in Merrillville

Well, it looks like the high school will be remaining in place. This has been a mini rollercoaster. I think overall this will be good for Merrillville; however, the school honestly needs a complete teardown and rebuild. I also think that if Indiana did not have the voucher program for use in private schools, Andrean likely would have needed to move to another location closer to their population base. Due to that program, it makes Andrean more economically accessible to a population base that is located much closer to the school and this should help with overall enrollment. Really hoping the school can become a state-of-the-art school.

Andrean High School to remain in Merrillville

Good. The anti-Gary attitude amongst so many Region residents is sad.

I feel bad for them...living so far from the beach!!
