Post Moving to NW IN - Where is the fun?? :)

Hello!

I am relocating to NW IN (going to be working in Gary) from near Detroit. I am in my early 30's, no kids, and single. I am looking for somewhere to live that may be equivalant to the Royal Oak area here. Someplace that has lots of stuff going on and is a good place to meet people. Does anyone have any suggestions? It seems most of the posts on here are concerning good family towns, which I hope to need in the future, but right now I am looking for a more social atmosphere.

Thanks!

Chicago ... sorry, but there are a lot of families with kids moving into NW Indiana because Chicago is too expensive.

Sorry, hate to pee on your parade, but Gary is the last place on earth I would recommend to anyone! Good luck though.

I'm slightly familiar with Royal Oak. However any places that are Royal Oakish would be found to the north and west of Chicago.

Valparaiso is supposed to be a nice college town. However, many of the towns in Lake and Porter counties, IN are either ghetto-rustbelt (Gary, East Chicago, etc.) Older summerhome communities (Ogden Dunes, Beverly Shores) or typical suburbia: (Highland and Merrillville).

Merrillville might be OK maybe.
You can also check out the city. There are a few nice areas on Chicagos south (check out Hyde Park/University of Chicago) that would be not that far of a commute to Gary.

There is a also a growing casino business in NW IN if you like gambling.

Hope this helps.

You probably won't find what you're looking for here in NW IN. Many (if not most) people your aged are married or divorced and many (if not most) have children as well. The ones that are still truly single at this stage... you probably wouldn't want to be involved with anyways.

This is a bad place for younger single people. There are a lot of families and a lot of single people several years younger than yourself.

Living in Chicago would, obviously, expand your social options tremendously. But, the commute wouldn't be worth it. If you're looking to settle down, you might want to rethink this one.

NW Indiana isn't so great for the singles life. Try getting close to Chicago and then you can just ride the South Shore into Gary.

Iggs is on a distinguished road
I lived in River North (Chicago) back in my single days and now live in Valparaiso. I am now married w/ a child. It is definately a family oriented atmosphere here. I highly recommend living in the city for a year or more. It's a decent commute to NW Indiana. Good luck!

The OP can ride the South Shore from Chicago to Gary, but how would she get to work from the Gary train station? It looks like she might be working at the mill.

As stated, Chicago is where all the fun is.
So, in order to be closer to that action look for a NW Indiana suburb that is close and a good place to live.
IMO, Munster is your best bet. You can be downtown CHicago on a Sunday is 45 min!
