Schereville is almost a sub of Chicago, because all of these towns are connected to each other. Safety is questionable as is Dyer, St.John, Munster, Hammond and all are connected to Gary, Indiana.

I grew up in a little town named Wheeler, between Hobart and Valparaiso. Valpo, Hobart, Crown Point, and Lowell, Indiana are all very safe towns. These towns are about an hours drive to Chicago.
I had family that went to Wheeler schools and I even attended the high school for a day as a visitor. Your alarmist assessment of Dyer, St. John et al sounds exactly right for a Wheeler resident.

Hobart's (a town which you call "safe") crime rate is comparable to Hammond's as well as much higher than the other towns you called "questionable". In fact, I've heard (anecdotally, of course) that Hobart has a huge gang problem. A family member of mine moved after a drive-by occurred across the street from their house.

Gary crime could just as easily spill into your "safe" towns as it could into those that you say are "connected" to it.

Wow.

Since when is Munster, Dyer and St. John connected to Gary? And when did safety in Munster, Dyer & St. John become questionable?

Uh, that would be me.

Or ... you could try any of these brokers in Valpo - all have good reputations:

www.mccolly.com (Valpo office on Calumet - Dave Remijan is the BIC and he's brilliant)
www.stolpe.org Small, local brokerage - Dean Stolpe has been around a long time
www.rmxaffiliates.com (Small office, great agents)
And Coldwell Banker - there's an office on Calumet in Valpo ... conveniently, right across the street from McColly!

Good luck to you.

I would definitely have to disagree with a previous post that says Dyer, Munster, and Schererville are unsafe and connected to Gary. I believe this is a pretty significant exaggeration and would recommend anyone considering a move to look at the facts before making a decision. These are all affluent suburbs in Indiana that are very well regarded. Just look at the average income data, average home prices, and crime stats provided on this very site as an intial reference.

That being said, I would recommend St. John or Crown Point to anyone in a heartbeat. They are safe, with a great quality of life, and a fairly easy commute to Chicago. Entertainment, dinning, and shopping are all close at hand but you can still have a home tucked away with a large yard and lots of privacy. Dyer, Schererville, and Munster are very nice too but I like how St. John and Crown Point still have rural sections remaining (although they are getting built up very quickly).

The best thing you can do is drive through the area to see how it feels. Plan a trip to visit towns in both Lake County and Porter County. Try to pick a few landmarks in each town (such as the downtown districts, schools, shopping, etc.) to really see the the town, quality of homes and neighborhoods and get an overall feel for each area.

For your situation, I would also go with Valpo.
