Default Chesterton

After looking at homes in Highland my husband is a bit discouraged at the small lot sizes. He wants to look further out in Chesterton/Portage. I am not familiar with either. I know they have a south shore line but any idea how bad the commute is to Chicago? It looks like the commute time will be about 1 hour and 20 minutes each way on the train alone. I wonder how we will handle this. He thinks it is worth living in a quiet town and having some land. We currently live in Chicago (Bucktown). We really do like it but have both grown tired of city life (16 years for me, 22 for him) and are ready for a move. We both work downtown and will need to commute. Please let me know any information you know about Chesterton/Portage and/or the commute. Do a lot of people commute from there? Schools are not an issue, we do not have kids. What are their downtown areas like, if they have a downtown? My husband really like Valparaiso but its just too far to consider. What would an average home with an acre or so cost? Also are they easy to find or is that rare? Sorry for all the questions and thank you for any help you can provide.

A lot of people do that commute everyday - it's a trade off for what one thinks is a better quality of life. If you're seriously considering it and have doubts about how you'll do with the commute - stay in a hotel in Chesterton for a week and commute to work. You'll get a good feeling for if you could handle it for life.

You can definitely find a home on an acre or two in Chesterton for $250-300K.

Good luck to you!
