Default What is a good part of Hammond to live in?

I am just curious, what is a good part of Hammond to live in? I'm looking for areas that are first and foremost SAFE, and close to the state line...

Any suggestions... what is your take?

I've always heard that South Hammond is the nicest part of town.

Oh come on.

Hammond is actually a pretty sprawling town - some parts are admittedly crappy ... most of the town in kinda eh ... but some sections are pretty nice

To cast such sweeping generalization on the whole town isn't fair.

My observation is that the area around the Purdue-Calumet campus is pretty decent. Nothing flashy, but solidly middle class.

South Hammond and parts by Purdue Calumet are the best. Hammond High School is swarming with gangbangers and drugs. I know a teacher there and just last sememster she heard of at least two drive-by shootings of students' homes. If you have a young child, Kenwood, Edison and Jefferson are the best Elementary schools. If you have a teenager, I would consider private schools. Some homes in south hammond and by Purdue are gorgeous. Most houses in northern areas and by Hammond High need to be totally renovated. I hope to see this city come up but they need to do something about all of the gangs.

This is an exaggeration in my opinion. I have lived in Hammond 8 years and I have never seen or heard of any drive-bys, never seen or been approached by drug dealers on one of my many walks through the city. Hammond is a pretty decent little town which does have its problems (as all towns do) but I lived for years in Chicago and I feel a LOT safer in Hammond than in Chicago!

As for the nicer areas, the area around Purdue is very nice, as is the area along Hohman avenue between 165th street at the north end and the Munster viaduct to the south.

Default Hessville/woodmar/purdue areas best

Hammond has gotten a whole lot better than it used to be. As far as gangs, there wanna be gang members everywhere. Most are just little punks whose parents let them run the streets without supervision. There is usually enough of a police presence to deter most activity. It should be that way in most towns anyway.
