Default Weekend House: Michiana Shores, Duneland, etc?

We are thinking about buying a weekend house in NW Indiana. The places we've contemplated (and can afford) are Michiana Shores, Duneland Beach(?), Shorewood and some rural parts of LaPorte (near county road 900 and 1000). Beverly Shores looks nice, but houses are too expensive.

Does anyone know these areas well enough to describe the "character" of each?

We are a quiet family, but we like to entertain, and would welcome a beach or country area that's quiet, but has some sense of community (ie not simply a bunch of houses, where everyone keeps to him/herself.)

Appreciate any information you can share with us!
