For a much more palatable commute, and since schools are a factor, Munster is your choice. Your husband's drive will be about 30-45 minutes shorter. The school system is one of the best in the area and the state.

Have you considered the Tri Town area of Northwest Indiana?
I live and work in this area. It seems like 1/2 of the citizens of Schererville, Dyer, and Saint John commute to Chicago. The taxes are lower, the schools are good... I believe Schererville is on some of the best place to live lists...
All good wishes,
Larry

just move into the city
or the close suburbs like oak lawn
its about a 30 min drive from oak lawn
so its not bad you figure midway is on 63rd and cicero
oak lawn starts on 87th and cicero so... great school systems but in 10 years that might change

How about Crown Point, Indiana? I hear they have good schools and plenty of shopping nearby. The commute to Chicago would not be nearly as bad as Valpo.

Not entirely true.
If you're on the north side of Valpo, your commute time if driving could be almost the same as some parts of Crown Point - and could be shorter via the Skyway. And if you're taking the South Shore, it's much easier to get to the station in Chesterton (from north Valpo) than it is to get to a comparable station from Crown Point.
