The idea to redevelop Gary, take land by eminent domain, attract educated professionals and transform the industrial lakefront is a wonderful idea.
But then, where would the residents of Gary go? They'll be priced out of their town and will have to move. But where? If they follow the geographical trend of the Robert Taylor Homes and Cabrini Green residents, the majority will head on south ...
South to Merrillville, Hobart & Griffith . They'll become the new Calumet City, Lansing & Dolton.

Against US Steel? Holey Moley!! Uhh, I don't think so. They probably have as many lobbyists in Washington as Gary has in population.

From what I understand, a lot of the the Robert Taylor and Cabrini residents ended up in Gary. The Chicago PD is assisting Gary PD.
Yes, I think it's not only a fantasy scenario, it's also a great idea. The steel mills didn't make Gary a bad place to live. It's been a steel town forever and back in the day, it was a nice place to live and work, in the steel mills. The steel mills aren't the problem.

US Steel has too much CLOUT. They send a lot of $$$ to Indy, and Lake County would howl if they went away.
Forget eminent domain, US Steel wouldn't give up that land unless they wanted to.

I guess what saddens me the most about Gary is that it used to produce some of the top high school track and field athletes in the entire country ... Terrence Duckett, Jeffrey Patrick, Angela McClatchey ... those are off the top of my head. They won state championship after state championship in the 80's and then poof, it was gone. I used to attend the Goshen Relays religiously for years just to watch Roosevelt High School blow the competition out of the water. It was a beautiful thing to watch. What in the world happened to their track program? Anyone know?

Couldn't agree more. Who cares about the violence, poverty, misery, hopelessness and despair. Nothing sadder in this world then losing a good track and field program.

snarky comment
Prairiestate gets it all too well. Great that they had a great track program but this doesn't matter compared to all the problems Gary needs to fix.
Gary has a lot more important things to worry about than winning the state track meet.
I think Gary is just a bigger version of East St. Louis and may never return to its former glory, or even a livable place.

Snarky comment II noted. You don't get it either. Gary was a pit even when Gary was winning in track meets. At least the city could be proud of something. They don't even have track anymore ... sheesh people!
