We lived there a long time ago, from about 1969-72, because my dad got a job there. In fact I still remember our exact addresses...307 Lawndale, 101 Superior, and 1129 Cedar. Except for being close to Chicago which made it convenient for seeing our beloved Cubs we really didn't like that well and moved back here to Indy where we've lived ever since.

Default Life in Michigan City - and the corruption which exists

There is a lot of corruption here. No one talks about it because of what might happen to them.

Medical is so awful that my employer's insurance company will not cover the local hospital or any of its subsidiaries.

Most of the jobs are low-pay and the people don't care if they get fired.

Personally, I would move if I could afford to do so.

In reply to your above post, I agree that the school system is bad. I'm glad I was able to go to public schools in a rural area of eastern Michigan. Most of my relatives who live here - had dropped out of school. Others have moved away many years ago.
I've previously named - names.
I've encountered my share of problems with the area - primarily because of a neighbor who has known the Cops who got fired. They'd be at my house everyday, as if there were no other concerns in the area.
He's called every agency - with help from his mama, who don't want him living with her - so she puts money into keeping him in a private residence, so he bother's others.
I've gone round after round with all of them, and if u're persistent - and inquire to the proper agencies & don't give up, they'll eventually move onto other fish they have to fry. I've had to spend time in a courtroom with lectures from a Judge - and the local City attorney who ran for Judge. I'm no longer bothered with any of them.
As to the medical 'cough' care in the community, how can u expect proper care from a Dr who is head of the Democratic Party, owns a strip mall, is the County Coronor & had run for a seat on the School Board ? One man can only be good at ONE occupation and can only provide a limited amount of time, & adequate care to a full time medical practice. Who knows what else he's involved with. He wouldn't make a patch on the backside of one former MD,
Dr. C. Novak. ( who also couldn't stand that batch or the so-called medical staff who make up basically 99% of the only phsicians within reasonable driving distance).

With the economy being what it is, MC would go down the tubes in 6 months, if it were not for the beauty of the lakefront, the Harbor, the boat docks & some help from the Blue Chip Casino.

As to the corruption & those who are part of it - I've named names. I've told them to their faces, as well. St. Agony Hospital is one of the worst I've ever encountered. I'd had occasion to go there 2 years ago in November of 06. I had Dr Chawla assigned to me. I didn't ask for him, in fact I'd requested it be marked in my chart that he stay away from me. All he was concerned with was 'who I was related to'. He came into my room the 2nd day & once again proceeded to inquire as to who I was related to in this area. Apparently, xome years back he'd had inappropriate encounters with some friends/ or / relatives, who's names he couldn't recall. I mentioned ONE name to him, just to stir up his curosity. It must have kept him awake all night, cause he was right there the next day, inquiring as to how, I was related to ' her'.
Turned out, after going into Chicago to a qualified competent physician, they was a kidney problem which went undetected by Dr. Chawla & his pal, he brought to my room.
Seems the whole town would like to move, if they had the ability to do so.

Actually Blue Chip is doing a lot right now. The hotel is almost done (can't wait to see it lit up at night!). They are also going to have banquet halls that would be great for weddings, quite a few restaurants and a full service spa which is supposed to be much nicer than the little ones we're used to in Indiana. They're going to be a mini city within Michigan City and hopefully will draw even more people to the area. I've already met quite a few people there from South Bend, Ft Wayne, Michigan etc.

There is alot of potential for Michigan City. They are also building an Olive Garden on South Franklin and recently installed street lights down Franklin all the way to I-94.

The new Blue Chip Hotel can be seen on Franklin as far south as I-94 traveling north. Its 22 floors I believe and really is a very impressive structure.

Here is a picture of the new hotel: http://www.urbanindiana.com/in_michi...080618-150.jpg

I'm still searching for the right set of words to describe Michigan City.

My first impression when we initially moved here was that I'd never met so many friendly people. Seemed like everyone was making eye contact and saying hi. And that was in parts of town that people from non-integrated parts of the world might find disconcerting.

At the same time, there's a a prevailing apathy. And I don't know if there's a nice way to say this, so I'll just bluntly say it : the people here are the physically ugliest on average I've ever seen assembled in one place. On some days I might even say ghastly. I mean, I don't expect to meet any beauty queens in the likes of a Walmart. But in the Michigan City Walmart, every day is Halloween, if you know what I mean.

Then again, what I just wrote probably says more about me than anything else, namely my need to continue to grow up and become more focused on what's inside than out. So another way to say what I wrote above is that you couldn't pick a better place to come live and interact with real, sincere people. Well, the home-owners, at least. The people who rent here generally seem to be quite another story. But that may always be the case, no matter where you go. Ownership tends to engender pride and responsibility.

The first thing we said to each other when we looked at Michigan City was that we'd never seen a place with more potential. There's no sane reason the downtown couldn't be revitalized. Of course if the people holding its strings are inbred a**wipes focused more on personal profit than developing a wonderful place to live, then there's not much that can be done except wait for them to die off, and hope their descendants are magically better behaved.

But we're looking forward to the possibilities here. And we're fully aware that they begin with us bringing something to the community, starting with being responsible homeowners, and continuing on by meeting and interacting with people, developing trust, etc.

And driving out evildoers when necessary.

On the latter note, we're looking at somewhat of a debacle in that we believe we've discovered that a couple apparently considered "pillars of society" here have no problem owning property in residential areas under the guise of a corporation, and then renting it out to any scum that can seemingly make rent, regardless of their personal character and the effect it might have on their surroundings. We're very unimpressed that people of such significant means, and whose main company can be seen supporting so many community events, would be engaged in helping miserable scum infiltrate peaceful neighborhoods. Yet we have undeniable proof, based upon public records and observation of tenant behaviors. Seems to be a classic case of "things are not always what they seem".
