Is it possible for one of the moderators to shut down this thread and redirect the OP to the other threads discussing Gary? They're all pretty much the same and this may turn into a a he said she said of those who support Gary and those who think it's a dump.

I think a person can think that Gary is, for the most part, a dump and still support the city. Its just that that support has to be geared toward making Gary a better, safer place. You cant improve a place without first aknowledging that there IS a problem. People who only know Gary as a place of deterioration and crime tend to have nothing good to say about it. But us old folks who remember Gary from the 50's and 60's know that it has been and can be again, a wonderful place to live and raise a family. It's not that us older folks want to only say bad things about Gary. It's that we have actual proof and memories of how great this city once was. You must keep in mind that when we older folks use the term "Gary" we arent just talking about buildings and streets. We are talking about nieghbors and nieghborhoods. For the most part it's people that make a city what it is. And I'm sorry, but the people inhabiting Gary now arent nearly as nice as the people who lived there in the 50's and 60's. And therein lies the root of most problems Gary faces today.

I agree Dan, we know what Gary used to be, and could be in the future. It didn't go downhill overnight, and it won't come back overnight. It will take a lot of hard work.

People driving the Ind trollway always attribute the bad smell to Gary. Actually it's the oil refineries in North Hammond that stink so badly... Gary gives the sky a red hue.
When I was growing up in Brunswick (Gary's NW side) I saw a more beautiful sky in the east at sunset than in the west!
