Relocating for a job in the Chicago Loop
My husband was offered a job on Friday and includes all relocation costs paid, signing bonus (for new house), closing costs on new house paid, health & life insurance paid at 100% - we're paying close to $600 a month now out of his paycheck - so huge bonus for us, they are paying a property management company to rent out our house in Colorado. We're wondering if we wanted a house that cost no more than $300,000 at the absolute most if Nortwest Indiana is the way to go. We need a good school system - our daughter is currently going to a private academic school now in Colorado - universal religion and focus is mainly academic and it has done her wonders. Are there school systems like this in Indiana or any place around Indiana that you could recommend that my husband isn't going to have a horrible commute? We have 180 days from his start date to use the relocation package, I plan on staying out here until my daughter is done with school at the end of May - and my husband is going to start work the first or second week of March. Any advice would be great.

Congratulations!!!! Seriously, your story is the envy of many right now.
I'm not familiar with the universal religion aspects of the school. But there are private schools, parochial mainly, in the region. As far as public schools, Crown Point, Munster in Lake County are good and Chesterton & Valpo schools are good in Porter County. Commuting via car or train is an option (if he's working downtown, I'd suggest looking at the South Shore train). In your pricerange, you should be able to find something nice.
Congratulations! Please let us know if that's helpful, or if we can answer more questions.

I know, considering my husband lost his job on Monday... we really got lucky! What is going to be the best commute for my husband...? Also what real estate sites should I look at? Century 21 website is not helping at all.
Thanks!

Northwest Indiana is Calling You Home! is the best. It's not affiliated with any realtor office.

Thank you... it's been almost 2 weeks and I'm still as lost as I was on Day 1 when her found out he got the job. We're considering munster now... but we wanted some newer construction built after 2000... does anyone know of any good neighborhoods around there? Thanks...

have you contacted a local realtor yet????? I have one whose name I can give you privately. From a distance, this would be your best option for finding things meeting your specs.

If anyone wants to message me privately... realtors or neighborhoods or anything that would be great. My husband is going to start looking as soon as he goes out there next week. I'm staying out here until my daughter finishes school at the end of May & we find a renter. But geez... this is so overwhelming. I really want to make my husbands commute as easy as possible for him.

Just curious... I know this isn't the right board... but does anyone know anything about Crete, IL? Looking at real estate it seems like you can get more for your money there. Does anyone know how far the commute is?

Many of the proposals for a third large Chicago area airport have centered around the Crete area if I recall correctly. Whether it will ever happen????
It seems there was some other large building project going on in Crete that would make it less desirable to live there, but I can't recall exactly what it was. I do have a few extened family members in that area. They moved there years ago because it was lower priced, but I wouldn't recommend it. It shares a border with some pretty downtrodden towns.
