Default Thinking of Relocating...HELP!

I've got some family in Valparaiso, Indiana, and I'm thinking of moving somewhere between them and Chicago. I would love to live in Chicago, but I just don't think I can afford it at this point. I haven't done much in terms of job searches but, given my Masters in Social Work and the current economy, I'm not expecting to make tons of money. Do you all have any thoughts as to any good suburbs in NW Indiana for a young professional? Or any general tips would be greatly appreciated!

You might be able to find something here for social work.

My best advice is to find a job first, and then make a decision on a where to live.

I'm going to agree with rrah. I'm in South Bend area and a friend of mine had no problem getting a social worker job here (about 2 years ago though)....she makes absolutely AWFUL wages though. Barely enough to survive over here.

I grew up in this area and my parents live in Crown Point. Chicago is a wonderful city, but to live in a decent area it will cost you BIG!!!! I would recommend living in Schererville or Dyer, IN within 30-40 minutes of Chicago and Valparaiso. (Route 30 takes you right to 394 minutes from Chicago, and Route 30 in the opposite direction takes you straight to Valpo.
