Some areas of Portage are pretty safe and there are a lot of rentals so the prices are pretty fair. You can rent a 2 bdrm 1 bath duplex for $625.

The person looking for Morton High School area, there are townhomes right behind that school known as Georgetown Homes, rent is 525.00 a month u only pay electric and your phone and cable bill. They just remodeled all of the kitchens and bathrooms. This is also walking distance to resturants and grocery stores. It also is not in a bad area. I have lived here my entire 47 years of life and yes it has changed alot but if u get involved with the community, we r taking our area back from the gangbanger wanna be's and we r not tolorating the crimes. north of 165th st is the worse area here in Hessville apparently they don't care what is going on around them.

I've lived in south Hammond since 1970. My street is quiet. People keep their houses fixed and their yards mowed. I feel safe.

and you can back that stat up by?????

let's see ... in your lovely borough of Queens, between 1996-2000, there were roughly 6,200 pregnant teenagers between the ages of 15-19. There were 175 pregnant 10-14 year olds in that same time frame.

A very good friend and former collegue of mine lives in Queens. Would love her to meet you ... she'd get that bitterness out of you. You don't sound happy, which is really too bad. Doesn't speak well to your own bliss.

Hammond, the "region", I think, has the potential to experience a real renaissance. All the areas that are fairly close to Chicago but less expensive, and that have some good neighborhood "feel" could become hot-spots for growth and re-birth as people who work in Chicago look for places to live. Improving rail/commuter lines from the area into the city will be a big boost. The region also has great potential for "middle-tech" industrial development and re-development.

The expansion of universities too has the potential to improve the economies of the whole area, which still has hard working people and relatively lower costs compared to other areas.

Because I lived in Hammond (Hessville) when I was younger. I know people and observe them. Lots of pregnant 14 yr olds out there. Many people refer to Hammond with that phrase. It's quite easy to divide areas of Lake County by the types of people that reside in certain towns. It's not something that is worth doing in a city like NYC. I love it out here and I love all of the different people. We plan to move upstate in a few years though, for a better place to raise children.

To compare Queens to NWIN is absurd. Of course there is more of every statistic you can think of in Queens. You are aware Queens is MUCH more populated right? Waste of time to bring up how many people did what here, this is a major metropolitan city. It is also the most diverse county in the WORLD.

I'm very happy living in NYC, so don't accuse me of being unhappy. I was unhappy in Indiana and only bitter towards certain aspects of NWIN. I've lived in 3 different boroughs out here and I love it. It's expanded my cultural horizons which would have never happened in NWIN, not much diversity out there. I feel sorry for you that you are satisfied living in that bubble world NWIN.

I am embarrassed of some people when my boyfriend (grew up downtown Manhattan) visits my family with me. There are so many obese people out there, mullets, and general lack of grammar skills. Do you hear the way people talk when you go to a store or somewhere public?! Embarrassing. I didn't realize this until I plucked myself out of the territory and came back to visit. Thankfully he has said I'm not like most of the yokels (but I still have a midwestern-ness about me, that he likes) out there and it's no wonder I left.

So yes, I have bitterness towards NWIN. It's okay to visit, but I would never want to live there again. I don't like the way it looks either. It struck me as junky on one of my visits. Don't get upset just because I don't like the area. Different strokes you know? If you like it, power to you, your life will be simple and you won't have to do a whole lot of homework like I will when we move upstate. You already know the area and don't really have to study everything about a community like I'm going to have to (when it is time). So calm down....geez.
