Hammond, the house in the movie "A Christmas Story" (high crime, neighborhood)

My son expressed an interest in going by the house in Hammond that was in the movie "A Christmas Story." Ive heard they give tours at Christmas time but since he is out of school and a bit bored, I thought we would take a drive to Hammond. I have never been there and have noticed lots of posts about Hammond having a high crime rate. Just curious if Hammond is a place you dont want to get lost in? Im from Detroit so I dont scare too easy but wise enough to know that I dont need to put myself in a bad situation either. Has anyone gone by the house or been in it? Is it in a rough neighborhood?



NEVER MIND...a website stated the house was in Hammond but its actually in Cleveland, OH. Bummer.

I believe that the house in Hammond is the house that Jean Shepherd actually grew up in. No doubt the house/sets in the movie copied what he described in his stories. I hear that Hammond does some kind of presentation around Christmas with showings of the movie and readings. I think they get somebody from the cast now and again to come for the festivities also.

I live a little ways South of Hammond. We've been meaning to go up there and check it out since we moved here but just haven't made it yet. Can't help you on the safety issues.
