There is a south shore stop in Hudson Lake too. Well, not IN Hudson Lake ... you know what I mean!

Thank you to all who posted and sent PMs. I have to admit that I miss the honesty, eagerness to help, and neighborly attitudes of NW Indiana. I have printed all responses for future use, and I very much appreciate them. While I'm on the topic somewhat of "Hoosier Hospitality", as a personal aside, I received a call today at work from someone in Indiana who is in need of some help. It was at the worst possible time; however, I took the time and ended up in a very long conversation with him. Why? Because he is a Hoosier, a "neighbor", so to speak, and I felt a loyalty to him because that is where I was born and raised. I miss you good people, and I'm glad that my parents are looking at getting back there.
As far as the driving conditions there in the winter, can anyone tell me how treacherous it is there, how well the streets are maintained (snow plows, etc.) in the LaPorte and Duneland areas? Driving in the winter is definitely a concern. I never felt that the roads were very well-maintained in the winter in Hammond, and Routes 30 and 41 could be downright treacherous after snowfall or many days of it. How is Hwy. 12 in the winter after snowfall? Are the cities out very early clearing the roads or what?
Thank you again.

La Porte actually does a great job at mainting the roads in the winter. They're usually clear all throughout town. HWY 2 & 20 are also usually clear, but they aren't the first to be plowed in a storm. If you head in the direction of Indian Trail and Fish lake, the roads can get pretty rough because they are somewhat cinsidered the backroads of LP. Now, Hwy. 12, on the other hand, can get pretty rough in a snowstorm. I've personally driven on this highway after a heavy snowfall and have seen cars loose control of their cars because of the ice. Overall, the roads in LP are maintained nicely as far as snow, the real thing to watch out for is ice.

Valparaiso is a nice town and the schools are very good. There are a lot of older homes as well as new homes on the northwest side and Aberdeen is right near 30. They are building a brand new YMCA and new restaurants keep cropping up. I think you should give it a look.

Valpo is great. We used to live in Aberdeen. Getting to the train from that far south of 30 is a pain, but it's great if you need to get to Merrillville and 65.

I looked at Aberdeen housing/lots a couple weeks ago...a lot bigger than I thought with an 'interesting' mix of low end and high end...also some weird architechure in the custom sections...home lots were pretty pricey too in the Woods area.
What street were you on?

We had no clue, coming from Chicago, we just loved the house. I managed to meet some nice people, but for the most part, people who lived there always had to say "we live in Aberdeen" somewhere in the conversation. I used to just say we live south of 30 ...

Funny...and most of those homes at Aberdeen are on TINY lots...whoop de do for them...living out West for the last 20 years skews things for me though as everything back there seems very inexpensive to me.
