North side of Crown Point
We are trying to decide if we should buy a house in Crown Point (furthest North we care to go) or Lowell (furthest South). We have seen a large number of houses for sale on the North side of Crown Point, mostly North of 109th Ave. but not so much on the South side of the city. Is there something going on on the North side that we should be aware of? School districts are not an issue with us as we have no school age children.
Thanks

I would think that part of the problem is many fear that Garys problems will soon reach the north side of Crown Point. And I'm not sure they are wrong.

Which way on 231?
Orig I assumed you're talking about the area due east of the govt center - they are poorly constructed.
You'd be better off in Lowell or DeMotte or Hebron

There's always been that fear. When I lived on 79th Ave our address was CP. Then it became M'ville and now I see most of the north end of M'ville is Gary.

Thanks for the info. That pretty much convinced us to look outside of CP.

Wow, I can't believe some of these statements. There's no way the north end of Crown Point is anywhere like Gary. True, some of Gary's decay seems to be moving into the north end of Merrillville, but that's still a long way from Crown Point. I do understand from others on this board that some parts of north CP are in Merrillville schools, so I can see that being an issue, but that in no way should disuade you from discounting all of Crown Point.

Well believe it - many of us lived in Gary for a number of years before getting pushed out to various parts of the state. My sil lived at the north end where those chicken coops were built (east of Govt center). He now lives in DeMotte and is very happy and my grand-children are too. No baggy pants and exposed buttocks in their school system. Btw - M'ville to CP is less than 5 miles. It won't be long before they are at the front gates.

The area East of the Gov't Center goes to Merrillville Schools.
If you're going to pay for the Crown Point zip code, I'd put my kids in CP schools. I'd never send my kids to Merrillville.

Crown Point, Center Township has Crown Point schools.
Crown Point, Ross Township has Merrillville.

The CP area that has Merrillville schools doesn't command CP prices - Ross Township is less expensive - sometimes substantially less - than Center Township.

Even though the OP doesn't have school age children, I thought I would mention this.
Merrillville High School is a nice looking school. Check out the Broadcast Journalism Station. Merrillville High School's Web Site For some reason it won't let me post the page but it is on this site. I have seen the Friday show and it is really cool.
Quote:
The Friday show (a tradition), is broadcast both on PNN and on Comcast Cablevision (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m.) This variety show provides a showcase for students and faculty to display their Television Performing Skills on a regular basis. The shows are produced by the students in the Broadcast Journalism Program

Then there is the planetarium. MCP General Information - Merrillville Community Planetarium
