Yea..I am just thinking that if I want a decent paying job with my Bachelors degree than the City is the way to go. So maybe Chesterton is the place to go since I had read that there is a station there. I am just looking into my options before I make the move. I have friends that live in Valparaiso.

Do you have any first-hand info on what the bus trip is like on the Chicago dash from Valparaiso? I may be moving to that area and from what I have read so far it doesn't take quite as long to get into Chicago as does the train.

Yes there don't seem to be many degreed jobs. My husband has been looking for over a year. He had an interview at a local bank and they told him he was over qualified and would probably be bored. He even tried taking his MBA off his resume. No luck but still trying and hoping. I also have a degree and find the positions in my field are few and far between and/or are about half my Chicago salary.
Chesterton would be a better location for commuting. That is the train station I catch the train at. i also love that its so close to the Dunes. I did look there but we didn't see any homes that we liked at the time. Both areas are very nice though. They both have really cute downtowns and we enjoy the European Market on saturday mornings in downtown Chesterton.
I also considered the Dash. I still may give it a try. The times were bad but I thought they were adding some. It's also more expensive then the train.
Good luck.

Yes I was reading at their site that times were being added for the dash. My degree is in Psychology and with only the BS...jobs seems pretty plentiful. It is not a big money making degree but with not-for-profits, Social Services, and the mental health field, jobs are available. But my friend was saying I am looking at $11 an hr in Valpraiso but I also have to consider the cost of commuting but it seems relatively inexspensive considering wear and tear on your car, gas, and not to mention road rage issues

That may be good for you in Valpo then. We supposedly have two new hospitals going up. One on 49 and route 6 which I think is the most likely of the two and the other on 49 and Burlington Beach Road which I believe is having some financing issues. I'd imagine nearby clinics to follow. I'd imagine it alot less stressful to work in Valpo then to commute. I lose about 20 hours a week to commuting. ....but I'm getting a lot of reading done.

Yea...I have to take that into consideration. Ok...this is going to sound very ignorant but we don't have much public transportation here in SW Missouri but does the ticket prices for bus/trains include two-way? Or is it a fee each way? Our system is pay when you get on each time but we do not have an elaborate system.

i lived in hebron indiana which is east of crown point and south west of valporaiso about 19 miles south of gary. driving to chicago it took me about an hour and ten minutes to make it to northwest memorial hospital to see my mother after she was air-lifted there. trust me i remember how long it took. my father drove everyday to bridgeview which is a west chicago suburb and it took him little under 60 minutes to get there, that drive was from hebron. hebron is safe but very very very small and country. so i guess it depends on what you like. valporaiso is safe no gangs or none of that, you do got loud college kids tho so you might not want the college area of town. chesterton is very nice, shererville is very nice, st. john, crown point, dyer, munster, highland all very nice. only thing about munster and dyer is that they are south of hammond. hammond, eat chicago, and gary all have very high crime, gangs, and drug problems. lake station is starting to go down under along with new chicago in hobart. portage and hobart are alright but give it another ten years and things are probably going to start going down the drain as well.
