Places to live southeast of chicago??
Hi,
I am considering a relocation assignment to De Motte, IN. I am a sales rep and have the flexibility to drive. Are there any nice area's between Chicago and Gary? I am 24, young professional, and looking for a somewhat faced paced lifestyle...

Highland, Schererville, Merrillville , Crown Point, Dyer, Griffith, St. John Lowell and a whole lot of even smaller little towns are all perfectly safe family oriented towns between Chicago and Demotte. None of em would fit the a "fast paced lifestyle". Maybe you could jet in every day from Monaco?

Nowhere I'd want to live between Chicago and Gary.
I know a couple of mid 20's who live in the East Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago (which is lively and urban) and commute to the Gary area by car. It really isn't so bad as they take Lake Shore Dr to I-90(Tollroad).
You could live in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago (where the University of Chicago is located). However, it really isn't the most lively place around in my opinion. Or, you could live in the South Loop/Printer's Row section of the city which would save you some time on your drive.
Good luck with your decision

Unfortunately, working that deep into Indiana will not allow you a fast-paced lifestyle unless you're willing to do a long (1.5-2 hour) commute from Chicago. Northwest Indiana has a neat character, but it's too far out from the city center to function well as a young fellow's playground.

Might be more exciting to live in a college town? Either Valpo or Lafayette are close.
Another relatively nearby and somewhat hip Chicago neighborhood would be Beverly - you could get on I-94 East to Indiana, might even be a reverse commute.

You're not going to want to fight traffic to get to Demotte--I would recommend Crown Point or Merrillville

Cost of living is cheaper in Indiana.
I would recommend Crown Point. You could always go to the city on the weekends.

Consider Munster. Might not be the cheapest town but you're right off the highway and can be in Chicago in no time.

Ditto St John and Schererville are nice too. I also agree with the poster who mentioned that you won't find any sort of fast paced lifestyle in NW Indiana (regardless of what people may try to tell you). The drive to Chicago really isn't bad though.
