I resigned a years lease with a boyfriend in March of 2009 after living with him for a year already in the same apartment and a month later he left me for another woman. I was stuck with an apartment I could not afford and had no where else to go. I was forced to take roomates and finally in November break the lease. Unfortunately this was my first apartment and knew little to nothing about the charges and cleaning fees attached to leaving or breaking a lease. Both of our names were on the lease and now im not sure why i have to pay all of these fees by myself. WHAT DO I DO? I CANNOT AFFORD THIS! please help

Your best option is to take him to small claims court now or wait until the landlord takes both of you to court.

Truthfully, I don't know if you can take him to small claims court if YOU haven't paid your penalties to the landlord.

It's a good life lesson though - if you're signing your name to something, you should know all the ramifications of what that contract entails.

Without seeing the wording of your lease, I don't think anyone is qualified to give you the correct advice. Heck, even with seeing it, you probably need legal guidance from an attorney.

Since you brought in other room mates when he left that probably lets him off the hook for rent. It may even let him off the hook for breaking the lease early since that was a decision you made later (without his consent I assume?) after getting other room mates.

You probably should run this by a lawyer- if you're broke look for some free legal aid- any larger city should have a legal aid office.

(1) Pay the fees
(2) Get a good lawyer
(3) Sue the hell out of him
