So after reading your very helpful forum for about a week, I decided to ask my questions.

I will be moving to the area due to a new job opportunity. I will be working in Hammond and have been looking at all of the towns. My new job starts January 1st, and I am supposed to deliver our first child February 17th. We will probably just rent an apartment for the first 6 or so months before we try to close on a house (this will allow my husband to find a job, so we can find the best town to settle in).

With that being said, here are my questions:
1. What are the best hospitals in the area? Any hospitals I should avoid for baby delivery? I am having a few complications (primarily gestational diabetes), so doctors familiar with high risk pregnancy would be best.

2. Are there any apartment complexes near those hospitals that are relatively inexpensive, yet safe? (Looking to be ~1000 for 2 or 3 bedroom). We also have a dog, so it would need to be pet friendly.

Any insights would be beneficial! Thanks

Glad to help! Regarding your first question, Community Hospital in Munster is considered the best hospital in the area. It is consistently ranked amongst the top 50 hospitals in the United States. For baby delivery, avoid Methodist Hospitals (Northlake Campus) in Gary, Indiana for sure. There are so many horror stories from that hospital (from safety to patient care to billing). St. Margaret Mercy (Dyer Campus) in Dyer, Indiana is a decent hospital too.

Regarding your next question, there are not very many apartment complexes in Munster. Most of the multi-unit complexes (especially near the hospital) are actually condominiums. Your best chance is to contact someone trying to sell a condominium nearby and see if you can negotiate a lease from them. Near the hospital in Dyer, there are not many apartments nearby, but you may have more luck finding rentals than in Munster. If you need anymore help, let me know!
