I don't think they own anymore land (at least not of significant size) in Schererville. However, LCSC does own a big lot on the corner of 101st and Blaine, which is technically in Crown Point. This would be the site of any new building or construction for the system if it were to decide to do so. From what I've read, a new high school at that location would have roughly 1500 students.

I don't think this plan has any better chance with the voters. It was clear that the last plan was rejected due to its high cost, not so much the second school promoters. This plan is only MORE expensive.

With the economy not really improving all that much, and the prices of plenty of things rising fast, no property owner is going to want to raise taxes.

I think they have to live with what they got and take better care of what there is. They wanted $4 million not so long ago for repairs that wouldn't have happened had they not cut so much maintenance and neglected the building. Doing things like that don't make me want to let them have more space, if they can't take care of what they got now.

I wanted to clarify why this plan is more expensive. The other plan did not include improvements to Protsman Elementary in Dyer. Right now, the elementary school has over 900 students in a space that is supposed to serve around 700. Protsman will be completely renovated in this plan.

Also just a reminder to everyone that the 2nd forum will be held tonight at 7pm at the LC Auditorium. Please go to view the slideshow and educate yourself on the issues facing the school system before voting, either way.

I wanted to pass along some information I received today regarding the Lake Central referendum that will be voted on in November. Hopefully by tomorrow, the PAC website www.supportlakecentral.com will be launched. This website will have more information including some slides from the slideshow that was presented during the previously held forums. It will also include a voiceover video clip walking around the schools and areas that need the most improvement so that viewers can clearly see the need for updated facilities. Also, if you're interested in volunteering to help get the word out, they're having their initial meeting at 6:30pm this Thursday September 8th in the Kahler module. There will be another one Saturday morning, but all of the info, times, etc should be posted on the aforementioned website. There will also be an elaborate explanation of the cost to each taxpayer. In fact, there will be a worksheet on this website that will allow any person to input their own information and get an answer for how much this will cost them. The worksheet will factor in all of the deductions, exemptions, and so forth so it should be pretty user friendly. This should be very helpful and will show people that the cost is based on NET assessed value, not gross assessed value of their home.

Also, they've consulted with the same individual who headed up the Crown Point campaign. There are plans to have shirts made, signs put in people's front yards, and things of that nature.

I know there were a lot of people wondering why no information was put online. It won't be on the school district's website to keep politics out of it, but this PAC website www.supportlakecentral.com should be very helpful, and again is supposed to be launched tomorrow.

As a follow up, it took a little while but this website, Friends of Lake Central Schools is now almost full functional. As you will see, the website now has a page where you can offer to help (door to door, yard signs, etc), includes a calculator to show the monthly and annual cost to the voter, as well as video clips done by the Superintendent and Asst. Superintendent providing explanations of the problems at both Lake Central High School and Protsman Elementary in Dyer, both of which would be completely renovated. The FAQ section of the website will be about 12 pages worth of FAQs and should be completed soon. I encourage those in the area to visit the website to get a good understanding of the matter.

I don't understand how Munster, Highland,Hammond,Griffith,Hobart and other surrounding communities have the tax base base to support a high school in their own town yet Scherrerville cannot. I have heard all kinds of excuses such as they don't have the land and the state of Indiana won't help fund it but I am skeptical of those claims. St.John and Dyer should have LC. Despite the recent referendum rejection no plans or options have been presented to include Scherrerville having their own high school.
