Considering a job offer to move from Phoenix to Fort Shafter (Hickham). I really like the north shore, but how is the daily commute in the mornings? Otherwise, would we be better off looking for somewhere to live mid-island? Seems like housing get pricier the closer you get to downtown Honolulu. Is housing less expensive on the north shore?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

You can expect about an hour, if you are lucky. and about the same coming home after work. It might be less on the Nshore than in town but probably not too much. Middle of the island would probably be cheapest.

Would the middle of the island be considered the shorth shore?

It might be a good idea to check out the traffic cams - remember to account for the time zone change. Some scary commutes, for sure.

We lived in the Salt lake area, Off Monalua Exit, close to the airport and it was a fine commute to either of the places that you mention. The street name was Ala Ilima. Lots of apartments/condos there.
Hope this helps some,
Lucy

Wow, you weren't kidding about lots of apartment complexes there. Looks very military, no?

The drive doesn't seem too bad from Kaneohe and that area seems very nice. Anyone familiar with Kaneohe?
