So I have decided to move to Oahu probably because I have a few friends there. I have never been to Hawaii but know I love it. I don't drive so some where that I can walk or ride a bike to get around would be nice. I am 28 single no kids so life is pretty easy in that area. I have 6 months of money for bills saved up just incase so I have been researching for a while but just found this forum. I am not so worried about a job soon or what I do either I am a great people person so the tourism jobs will be a cinch and am very mechanically inclined. Just want a perspective from someone who has been or lived there.

I suggest Waikiki, its expensive, but you don't need to drive anywhere if you don't want to. All your jobs would be with in walking distance and if its just you, getting groceries home on the bus won't be a problem.

I live in Waikiki with a family of 5. I love it here and don't want to be in any other part of the island right now.

Ask your friends to help you get accustomed to the island and where a good spot to stay would be. A lot of folks share apartments to help with the costs of things. Perhaps your friends have a spare room they can rent out? They can also help you in finding a job since frequently in the islands, it's not what you know but who you know and who knows you as to whether you get the job or not. Being friendly is a huge plus and not mentioning how things are done on the mainland or trying to change Hawaii is also a huge plus.

For the not driving part, it's perfectly okay to not drive on Oahu. There are a lot of folks who don't even bother to get a driver's license since driving and parking is such a bother with the amount of traffic on Oahu. There is a monthly bus pass you can get - your friends will know the closest place - and that's the best way around. Oahu has a good bus service.

I am moving to Oahu in a few days and I have never been before either. I have the same attitude as you do about being outside and using a bike to get around and just enjoying the environment. I don't have a job either but will be focusing on the tourist side of things as well! I'm moving from the North East and so excited to have a warm, sunny winter this year. I'd love to hear about your experiences when you finally move. Best of Luck!

I have been here for about 2 years. The job situation, even in the tourism industry, is a bit difficult. You will definitely be okay if you can speak Japanese since many hotels will only hire you if you can. However, there are usually quite a few server jobs available at places like the Cheesecake Factory.

As for places to live; if you want to be able to walk/bike to work, then you will likely need to live in Waikiki. The person above who suggested living with friends or other people is absolutely right. An apartment by yourself could cost upwards of 2k per month but if you find some people to share with (check craigslist), you will likely be able to find a place for about $600/month or so.

Also, if you're willing to take the bus to work, Kahala and Hawaii Kai are very nice, but can be expensive unless you're sharing a house.

Good luck with everything and feel free to ask any other questions. =)
