As part of our move to Honolulu early next year, wondering what our initial car options might be. Being NYers, we don't own a car & I haven't had one in 20 years!

We could buy a new car, used, but also wondering about leasing? Anyone have experience with leasing or can recommend a good place to buy a used car, other than Criagslist?

Mahalo!

This all depends on your budget and how long you want to keep a car.

You need to read up on lease money factor, which equates to APR. Also, usually can't buy/lease a car on the mainland and ship to Hawaii.

For instance, Lexus. Lexus N. America is not Lexus in Hawaii. Lexus N. America will not let you register your car in Hawaii unless military (if you get it to Hawaii under financing). I have direct experience with this.

Huge exceptions to the following: It can depend on residuals, price of car, money factor, etc.

Car short term often means lease.

Car long term often means buy.

If buying new, you can often get a better deal in LA with discounts, ship it, pay the tax, Better than buy it in HNL. But you got to compare.

Gas is $4+ plus here, if important keep that in mind.
