Hello everyone.
I'm really concerned about my situation.
My dog that I have lived with for 6 years is coming to Hawaii in June.
However, right now I'm living in "no pet" policy apartment, by Kukui Garden.
I know it's really bad to live with my dog in a no pet policy, risking the chance of getting caught, but I really need to stay with my dog and I need to stay in this apartment for multiple reasons.
Do anyone have any idea that will permit me to have my dog stay with me?
I really need help..I was thinking about therapy dog but that will just take too much time and it's really pricey..Please help me with any ideas..Thank you

Having been a landlord, I hate it when my tenant lies to me or does something that I've asked them not to do. Your landlord rented their property to you with the agreement that you wouldn't have pets.

Do you have a signed lease? Does that lease say that you could have a pet if you pay an additional deposit or a higher monthly rate?

Honesty is the best policy. If you bring in a dog, your landlord will find out sooner or later, and you will be evicted. Could you ask them if they would take more rent in exchange for having a pet?

They will boot you extremely fast - that is a low income housing project and no way they will allow a person with a pet in a no pet unit. This isn't even a negotiate with the landlord situation. If you were in a condo or something, maybe - not this place.

I was just going to say the same thing,

@Op

Not sure what the exact rules are overthere now but i heard your in low income housing? Section 8 or SRO? Both programs allow pets under a certain weight, if doctors find it necessary for your welbeing like what jung said. Check with your landlord and project casemanager.

PS We all love our pets, but i wouldn't sacrifice my housing for it. Esp in Hawaii where its a blessing just to find low income housing. Find a friend who can dogsit while you get your pet approved.

One thing to consider is that if you do bring the pet in, the odds of getting caught are super high. There will always be that one neighbor who desperately wants a pet but follows the rules...and makes sure you do too.

Don't, don't, don't try to sneak your dog in unapproved. As Dthraco said, you're almost guaranteed to get busted for it, you'll have almost no time to deal with it, and you'll wind up with a black mark that could cause you trouble down the line.

And don't even THINK about trying to fake a Service Animal status with bogus internet papers or vest... people are catching on to that scam.

This is true. When people first started trying to abuse the Condo policies and bring in Pets, there was some litigation and Associations got nervous and started accepting Doctor notes regarding the dog being necessary for your mental well-being. As more people began bringing pets into no-pet buildings policies and legal interpretations evolved

Today a doctor note is almost never accepted. Now the dog typically needs Therapy Dog Certification with special training to perform a specific task in order to be allowed into no-pet buildings.

I know nothing about your specific building or Association. But generally believe trying to skirt establish rules rarely works.

There you go, OP. You can pretend to be handicapped so you can get all the special privileges that a handicapped person receives. Maybe you could get the dog a guide dog for the blind harness and tape your eyes shut and stagger around.

Don't forget to park in the handicapped parking space while you are pretending to be handicapped. Why let the genuinely handicapped get all the service dogs and special parking, when you deserve special treatment, too.
