When we rented a townhome in Wailuna (Aiea), we worked in the Pearl Harbor area, but most of our neighbors worked downtown.

Later we purchased a home up in Pacific Palisades (Pearl City) and again most of our neighbors worked downtown. The commute can be daunting at times, but depending upon the time of your commute, not too bad. Mostly I heard times of 30 - 40 minutes.

I had a co-worker who lived in Makiki and commuted to Camp Smith; she said her commute was very short (15 minutes) - sigh!

My Help Desk guy lives in Mililani. Takes him about 45-50 minutes to get to work just north of Downtown (20 min walk to center of downtown).

Ok thank you. That's about the same commute as I have now in my city. So people do commute from burbs then.

So if they work downtown and commute, they'd pay for parking downtown? What are they all executives?

My neighbors weren't all execs, and unfortunately I am not aware of what they paid, if anything, for parking. I know when my Corporate Office was near the Airport, but we had parking associated with the building and the Corporation had that included in their rent - we (employees) paid nothing.

When I worked downtown, the company paid for a parking garage spot in the basement of the building. Where I work now, just north of downtown, we have to find street parking.

If I worked Downtown again and did not get parking, I would probably ride the bus.

Working downtown was fun though! At lunch you have soo many good options for food. Very entertaining area. Mmmm...Salmon bowl...Sashimi Salmon over rice with pickled seaweed and a side of Miso Soup. Or even Blazin Steaks where you can get steak, rice, and salad for under $10. Nom Nom.
