I've got some good news for those looking to get married. Hawaii is not the most expensive - and almost seems cheap compared to other places.

Average cost in Hawaii: $31,461 excluding honeymoon. Easily beating NYC at $65,824 and Chicago at $53,069

Without more context, this survey strikes me as meaningless. It seems to measure the average of what people in different states reported having spent on their weddings, as opposed to what a wedding "costs" in these states. A wedding can range from two people getting married at City Hall with a couple of friends present to the bash that William and Kate threw in London last year. My wife and I got married in her hometown of Hilo 10 years ago, and we spent about $15,000 for the entire three-week trip. That included renting Nani Mau Gardens for an afternoon, food for 75 guests, hiring a local Hawaiian band, a photographer, a pastor, and an organist, decorations and take-away favors, flowers, bridesmaids' dresses, airfare for us and my wife's two sons, two nights in a hotel (we stayed with relatives the rest of the time), and food and souvenirs for the remaining three weeks. We thought we were being extravagant, until we read that the average amount spent on a US wedding at the time was $25,000. I imagine that $31K would pay for quite an impressive shebang, even a decade later.

I don't understand why would wedding has to be about spending crazy money just to please everyone around ? As for me I would rather rent a place in the jungle similar to zoo with all kind of animals and celebrate my day with them rather then bunch of people who wants to drink and eat for my money. Simple-nice dress and riding a white horse on a beach where my honey bunny would wait for me along with the camera guy to capture the memories would just make me more then happy. And for honey moon I want us to build a tent and enjoy like a wild

Never in my mind would I imagine spending so much money on a wedding. We got married 5yrs ago here and it cost about $500. We spent about $5k more for our honeymoon. The only guests we had were the few family that live on the island and anyone else that wanted to pay there way to see us get married

That means you really helped keep the average much lower
