Who wouldn't want to "waste" 58 hours per year in Honolulu traffic? It's Hawaii, man! It's paradise congestion, not the annoying kind of traffic congestion we have here on the Mainland!

"Paradise congestion?" I'm not buying that.

Well, I'm not stuck in Honolulu traffic nearly as often as I used to be stuck on the 5, 10, and 405 freeways in LA. But I will say:

- no billboards
- ocean views (often)
- no semis blowing exhaust and blocking my views, and not seeing my little Mini in the lane next to them (I *never* drove with my top down in LA... too gross, and nothing to see anyway!)
- no horns (usually)
- very rare to see the accelerate-to-tailgate-the-car-front, swerve-fast-to-change-lanes (no signal of course), repeat-repeat-repeat move that is so common in LA

It really does feel like a different kind of traffic jam here. (But I'm not sure I'd feel that way if I were stuck in it every day.) Maybe it really is "paradise congested."

The main difference for me: If you live in town in Honolulu, you don't have to deal with the traffic hardly at all. Yes, King street gets busy at rush hour, but most of the time it's not that bad. And when it's bad, it still moves. There is literally no place you can live in LA to avoid dealing with traffic for 90% of your life.

I'll take the place with the worst (but avoidable) traffic over the second worst (but it's a constant in your life no matter where you chose to live & work) any day.

Sure, it's like "paradise poverty" – holding down three jobs and living in a dump. But it's a Hawaiian dump, and you get to go to the beach one afternoon per month on your day off when you don't have other chores to do. That makes it all worth it, right? Right?

You guys tell that to my relatives who commute to town from Wahiawa, Mililani and Kapolei. I used to commute from Wahiawa until about twelve years ago. Back then it was bad, but it's much worse now. I'll agree drivers are more friendly here, but the simple fact is there are too many people and cars on Oahu.

I agree, I am shocked by the amount of cars on the island. But what can you do. And when the 2-3 lane road gets shut down to put metal plates over the potholes, it can lengthen your journey more than the short distances would warrant. But I have never been completely stuck for a long while like some places on the mainland
