I loved them all dearly but there is no way, if I were a landlord, that I would assume that a smaller dog is better-behaved than a bigger one. IME, often quite the opposite.
In Hawaii the condo associations usually make the rule based on weight. There is not much chance for a tenant to get them to change that rule. But, if the association does not have a weight limit but it is the OWNER imposing the rule then their is a chance that you can use the local ASPCA to lobby the owner to take a large pet that is more suitable to apartment living (greyhound) versus a small (jack russell terrorist) dog that is generally NOT suitable for apartment living. Devil Dog being the exception

I volunteer a bit with animal rescue. I cannot accentuate enough to NOT lie to the landlord or be trying to "hide" that you have pets or the true number of your pets. When the landlord finds out, and push comes to shove, it is surprising how often the decision is made by the pet-owner to get rid of the pet. And this applies to pet-owners who have paid big $$ towards their pets in the past ... the stress of finding a new home to live in vs adopting out a pet, well, sometimes the pets loose.

My advice: Be upfront, be honest, and don't set yourself up for a potential failed rental situation.

Exactly what CyberCity said. I work with rescue groups for a particular breed of dog that is expensive to own, and I'm continually shocked by how many of those are turned in to kill shelters because the people are moving. So sad.

No offense, but this is terrible advice. When the LL finds out, one of 2 things will likely happen - the tenant will get evicted or get rid of the extra cat to stay in the apt. I have 4 small dogs (yes, 4). I have never once lied about how many pets I have because I would never put them or myself in jeopardy. I don't know why someone is even posting a thread on how to go against their lease, which is a legal binding document.

I have a close friend that runs a breed-specific rescue in Hawaii. She just had a dog turned over to her because a lady in military housing had 5 dogs when she was only allowed 2. Military found out, and now she had to get rid of 3 of the dogs in order to stay on base.

I constantly see ads on Craigslist where someone is getting rid of a pet because "LL won't allow it." Boggles my mind that renters don't think to ask their LL first if they can get a pet.

The no pets thing is caused by, people that are slobs and won't take responsibility to take care of there pet, so these scummy people ruin it for responsible pet owners. Up here in wisconsin almost all the listings are no pets, animal shelters are over filled.

One time I called a person advertising a rental house, I told her that we had 3 cats and she laughed her @ss off! We now own a house and have 5 cats.

Dogs are different than cats - dogs have to go outside, you can't hide that - if a landlord allowes 2 cats how would they ever know there are 3 cats? Unless they have hidden cameras in the house and you keep your cats in the house - 3 cats or 2 cats, same thing. Should you stay homeless otherwise?
