I'd go to yelp and find some mechanics in the area where the car is - call ahead of time and see what a basic car inspection costs - and take it in. Tell them the situation - I'm sure you will find plenty of places to look at the car. As far as a fair price - the online kelly blue book site can be a guide as well prevailing rates for similar cars on craigslist.

eBay motors is also helpful...look up the year, make, model, mileage similar to what you are looking to buy, then look at completed listings...ones that have sold will give you a guideline.

I just bought a car here and had the same dilema. One car I took to Lex Brodie's in Aeia (Barry is the manager) and they did a nice, thorough inspection of the car for about $130. Based on their info, I passed on that particular car.
