Car sold today. TV sold. Most everything else. Found a place in Makaha, I think that's the spelling. A long ways to commute but half of what I drive right now. Less than a week. (in case anyone's curious and gives a hoot)
Waianae coast? Who helped you find that? Wanna give us a hint on the street or which building/apt./condo for possible comments? Not all areas are equally attractive.

It may be half the drive, but I bet it will be twice the time.
Understood, Mikala, especially since I'm on freeway most of the drive here. I'm an early riser, though and expect I'll be leaving the house around 6am. We're about 3 blocks from the beach... not sure the neighborhood. Won't commit until we have boots on the ground. The owners got messed over on their last tenants so the place needs refurbishing, which is perfect for my contractor/builder/carpenter fiance. Nice trade off for affordable rent.

You have a 16 year old, so what are you planning for school? I am usually loathe to talk down the westside, but the schools along the Waianae are just plain not so good. If you think you can afford it, look into Island Pacific Academy (pre-k thru 12) in Kapolei. It's an absolutely wonderful school (there is an IB program I believe in the Elem and Middle shools). It exudes a complete Ohana feel at the school. I have first hand knowledge, as my grandson attended and still longs to return back to his friends and teachers.
If you can't afford private, then Campbell High School has come a long way and I would recommend it over Kapolei High.

Rush hour - well, rush hours on Oahu start much earlier than the mainland, 6am is peak traffic - it is already bumper to bumper at 530am.

So true! Since by 6am Island time, it's nearly noon on the east coat (Mainland), traffic to get into work (especially on military bases) is early as well. You will be in awful traffic - beautiful scenery- but awful traffice between 0530 to 0600 on Farrington Hwy and then on the western end of H1.
