As an ex-contractor, and a union one at that, I wouldn't base any important decisions upon what the union tells you. The work may be there, but local union workers will come first, and they have been unemployed/under-employed for years.

Really, that is interesting. Thank you for sharing. When we spoke w/ the dispatcher he said he would go right out for work. We were under the impression anyone on the books were 'choosing' to be. The dispatcher also said that they would clear book 2. Of course, we will send DH over to check it out and meanwhile glad we aren't selling the house!

Your best bet would be to write up a resume, circumvent the union, sort of, and send the resume directly to the electrical contractors involved in the projects. A paddling buddy of mine was the main guy for WASA for years, he knew, right off the top of his head, who was 'worth it' and who wasn't, work wise. And that was literally hundreds of supposed journeymen electricians.

Aloha

Side note: Some unions forbid that, unless the union member has been with the union long enough to be able to have an employer request them. It is a privilege of having long-standing union membership. Otherwise, dispatching goes by who is on the available list for that specific skill, and then the list is worked from the top (registered the longest as seeking work) down. But granted, I do not know how the OP's husband's union dispatches. If their union allows a contractor to hire without following the dispatcher's oversight, then a thorough resume could be of benefit in combination with making the rounds of electrical contractors. And ditto if they need a certain amount of union membership to search for work outside of the hall, in that case a resume could be helpful.

It has nothing to do with whether the union approves or disapproves. Sending a resume is merely an attempt at giving the possible future employer a 'heads up' as to who they may be hiring. The larger electrical contractors already have their own long established list as to who they want and don't want, but that list consists of long time resident union electricians, not newcomers to the Islands.

But worth considering is if it is wise choice to move to Hawaii and start off by breaking union rules (should that be the case with the OP's husband's union).

Regardless, it would be worth checking prior to arrival, since if he learns that having a resume would be handy it would be easiest to write one while still at home with his past employment records at hand.

The resume idea isn't practiced at our local. They go by the book list and in order of who has been without work the longest. I'm not really sure about what is common in Oahu or what would be considered beneficial or not. Hubby is going to the hall today, there is a man from our local working over there now and they are going to put us in contact with him. Perhaps he can shed some light on some of our questions

Your husband should be able to find a place with a month to look.

Best advice on the forum, have him stay in a temporary place while he looks at places to rent first-hand. While it sounds great for the OCD mind to sign a lease ahead of time, it's a bad ting to do. Alot has happened in the last 10 years, and scam artists are completely on top of the desires of folks to move here. Physically looking at the palces and meeting the agent is the best way to go. When we moved, we had 3 places to scope out that were on craigslist. The #1 place looked WAY different in person, scary actually.

NOTE: Don't feel like you need to defend your decision or money situation to anybody on here. If they don't answer your questions, look elsewhere.

Thanks. What places do month rentals? I've read to do vrbo and me to mention that we're moving instead of vacationing. Any other ideas?
