I have a question for a friend who wants to visit Oahu for a few months after retirement. Here is a e-mail i recieved from him. [Quote)
I have a question. When we leave the working life I would love to spend a few months in the islands. What is an economical method to do this? Rent a house? Rent a car? Quote]

I do know he might be paying more taxes not being a resident. Just would like your feed back on what people do for short duration stays in the Islands. I have sent him a email asking which island or islands he plans to visit. Have not heard back from him yet.
Thanks you for your input.
Scott

I don't understand the bit about paying more taxes as a non-resident. He has to be a resident somewhere. Tell him to try not to have income from more than one state in a tax year. Very expensive.

Thank you for the reply,
What i so clumsily tried to say, lol. When you stay at the hotels you normally pay a visitors tax.
I received another email earlier that discribed what they are looking to do.
E-mail today[quote] We may reside all of the time on one island or spend a month each on a few islands. My fear is that the typical tourist hotels would be very expensive for a longer stay.

Even though I will be a haole, I want to live like a resident (sort of). We want to experience the islands fully rather than be a tourist for a week or two and then leave without seeing much anything. As campers we prefer to experience nature rather than tourist traps.

Hope that clears up my clumsily ask question.
Thank You,
Scott

In some places I've lived, hotel taxes aren't charged after 30 days, and some will even refund any such taxes paid after the 31st day. Not Hawai'i.

Any rental in Hawai'i less than 6 months, whether hotel room, time share, condo, house is subject to the Transient Occupancy tax of 9.25%, in addition to 4.712% General Excise Tax on Oahu, or 4.166% on the other islands.

A resident of Hawai'i who stays in a hotel pays the same tax percentages as a tourist. They may get a resident discount on the room rate, but the tax rates are the same. Rentals over 6 months only pay the GET.

Thank you openD,
This is what i was looking for. I knew it was a lot when you figured everything in. The first Five years i lived on Oahu all my Relatives showed up all the time, now no! That's what happens when you live here a while, 20 years as a resident, you don't realize how high and how many different taxes involved in tourism. I guess i need to pay more attention, lol.
Thank you i will pass on the information to my friend so he is prepared.
Scott

Your friend could look into a furnished apartment lease of six months to not have to pay the tourist tax. Or perhaps he could find a short term care taking job somewhere or a house sitting job? If he has a house on the mainland, he could see if someone wants to do a house swap with him.

Thank you for the reply hotzcatz,
I will relay the information. I received another email from my friend. It gave a time frame for his visit in a couple of years in January. So he has time to plan now and do more research with the information that was provided on this thread, and what i provided. Thank you all,
Scott
