Hello. Ive been researching new cars for my impending move to Oahu. I'm trying to figure out if i should buy new here on the mainland then pay the 1k to ship it or just buy a new car when i get there in 3 months. i'm getting conflicting info. the prices on dealer web sites both in TX and Oahu are very close for the same model and trim for the vehicles im interested in (mazda cx5 or toyota rav4) ive called a dealer in hawaii and they are tell me the shipping cost when buying new will be about $800 - the same as TX. is there something im missing or the dealer is not telling me? With the info i have now buying a new car in TX then shipping it would be stupid. any info on buying a new car in Oahu would be appreciated. Thanks, looking forward to leaving this el paso desert.

If you take possession in Texas then ship it to Hawaii yourself, it will probably cost more.
I know one person who purchased two new Lexus sedans in Seattle, and arranged to take possession of one of them at the Maui dealership. That person claims to have saved thousands by doing so. Perhaps your Texas dealer could make the same kind of delivery arrangement? It would only be worth it if there is a big savings, and doesn't create an extra tax burden.
Best of luck!

Well, for starters the shipping from Texas wouldn't be $1K... closer to $2K. One of our regulars paid $1.7K a couple of years ago from Houston, another just reported paying something like $1,995. Trucking the car to California isn't cheap.

The base vehicle shipping cost from California, on any of the 3 companies that ship cars... Pasha, Matson or Horizon... has been $1,075 for a couple of years or so, but in December Horizon announced they were raising their tariff by $75 in January, so I imagine they will all follow suit.

Update: I just checked Pasha, and their standard car tariff is now $1,100

Possibly. Many new cars in Hawai'i have a $2 - 4K dealer upcharge on the sticker that is separate from the shipping charge. We've had posters here talk about ordering new cars from California just for this reason.

In any case, the only thing that matters is the out the door, landed in Hawai'i, all fees paid, bottom line cost. As has been previously suggested by others, get an email or a fax from them quoting that final cost to you, or it's not real.

.
You absolutely do NOT have to pay that ridiculous dealer markup here. We've bought three new vehicles from three different dealers since we've moved here and simply told them that we would not be paying it. I think we used the words "bull s**t" when discussing it with the dealer. Be ready to walk out. Of course the salesperson had to run off and "discuss it with the manager" but they always agreed.
Just say NO.

You are moving to take government job at Wheeler correct?
Are you moving on a Government transfer orders? In the Navy or any military transfer. The Government pays shipping one car to your new duty station, you have to pay to ship a second car. Have you checked into that Possibility ? Just asking.
Best of luck on your move.
Scott

Unless you're moving on the taxpayers' dime, one really good advantage of planning to buy in the islands is that you may find out that you don't really NEED a car, or that you would be happier with a used compact car that you won't worry about and can sell cheap when you leave.

I've lived on O'ahu twice (long story). The first time, I didn't have a car, and the second I bought an old Toyota, then gave it to friends when I left. I would not bring a nice car unless I knew that I would need it, and had safe, dedicated parking at both ends of the daily commute.

I see those old Toyotas all the time, casually parked on the side of the road on the Pali. For days.
Some people are not comfortable driving an unreliable old POS but it may work for others. The Bus is an option, of course.
But if you go for the junker you better have a good mechanic available. Now there's a challenge, along with a newcomer getting a fair shake on repairs. If you can handle your own repairs, it might be okay. Otherwise...

A colleague accepted a position with a large medical group in Hawaii and her new company paid for one car and one container...

Have you checked with your employer regarding relocation?

I had a friend that worked for Matson lines... they had negotiated prices with several large employers and government agencies.

One of my friends brought over his Suburban and said it was a mistake... black on top of it... way larger than what he needed.

Appreciate all the advice. i could have been more informative. military - yes so 1 car is free delivery, 2nd car is the family suv (trailblazer w/ 90k @ 16MPG) i'm not bringing this thing with me, i want to size down. parking will be no issue.
i did get the bottom line out the door price quote from servco toyota with all fees listed and a copy of a recent sale agreement. the price is the same as in TX +/- $200 for whatever additional options come with that particular car. after reading ur advice and doing some more leg work, i will buy when i get there. thx again. i'm sure i will be seeking more advice at some point, really looking forward to this move.

Have a question please we have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma has a ton of miles on it and was considering shipping it, but think now that would be a mistake and we should just buy one there. Is there a benefit to shipping it versus buying one there that I need to know about ??
we paid cash for it and do not have an loans
We currently have to pay property tax on it yearly to the county we live in and it is about $200.00 to $250.00 a year
when we bought it we had to pay sales tax to the state which ran about $400 something
we had to register it with the state and get plates cost about $120.00
have to renew the plates yearly around $57.00 or pay for 2 yr plates about $90.00
6 months full insurance coverage is about $285.00

What are going to be the cost difference in Oahu for this ? even if we do not ship it ( cost is $1900.00 price current 4-2016 from MO) we would still buy a Toyota Tacoma there similar in year and style

what will be our cost ( not shipping) if we bring it with ??
What is our cost to buy used from an individual ??
Tank you
