Makes sense. Tagalog is the Philippine national language so it's spoken widely amongst Filipinos, in addition to their regional language or dialect. So someone who speaks Ilocano would also most likely speak Tagalog. Similarly, a Cebuano would also speak Tagalog.
From speaking to 'kababayans' in HI, most of the Filipinos there are Ilocano. (But, those Ilocanos probably also speak Tagalog!)
Filipinos outnumber Japanese in Hawaii and a far higher percentage of them are first generation immigrants. The strong majority of Japanese living in Hawaii are American-born and most speak little to no Japanese.
I guessed Tagalog even before I opened the thread. How many Japanese people are still immigrating to Hawaii, most have been here generations and intermarried, youre most likely to hear it from tourists. There are more Filipinos than Japanese in Hawaii by far.
