I've posted in here before about considering a move to Hawaii, now we're closer to the time we need to decide, and some additional questions have come up:

- how is the job market there? Specifically, would it be incredibly difficult for someone to find a job in satellite communications/computer programming/networking/security assurance. This would be my husband's last PCS while in the military as he doesn't plan to reenlist, but I feel as though he isn't going to want to leave if we DO move, I'm just curious as to how hard it would be to find a job in his field.

- I am in school for medical billing and coding, I've read that medical jobs are easier to come by on the island. Is there a good chance I'd find employment, or is it still tough?

-Is it even possible to find a 3 bedroom house or condo in a decent school are for $500k or less?

Jobs won't be a problem - although you might not like the pay.

Finding a house under $500K a commutable distance to jobs - no.

If he retains his secret clearance, IT Security guys are always in demand. He will want to sign up with the Oahu chapter of the ISSA when on island to start fostering relationships.

Can't help on item #2

For your 3rd question, that would be a solid no. oahure.com is a local service that lists the MLS in a great searchable format. I would recommend checking that out if you intend on buying. If you want to rent, craigslist is the way to go.

thank you for the input. I think for now we will rent and see where to go from there..We would like to get out on the island vs being in base housing, I know the Miliani/Aiea/Kapolei areas are often recommended, but are the Ewa Beach/Waihapu areas unsafe, or just far from everything else? Our kids won't be of school age for our first few years there, so schools aren't a huge concern at this time. We would like to keep rent somewhere in the $2500-$3000 per month range for a 3 bedroom, from the listings I've found that seems do-able, but I know a lot of rental listings online are scams (or so I've heard) so from your experience would you say that's an okay budget? What would you say we could expect an electric or water bill to be? I've heard $600 for electric but i'd like to hear others experience as well.

Also, what are your favorite places to go/things to do? We're trying to assemble a "hawaii bucket list" of things to do/food to try, etc. any activity or restaurant recommendations are welcome

Have your Husband check these three sites out: You will have to open a account join the sites to gain any updates.
When your Husband goes through Tap class he will be able to gain more information on the different Federal job Opportunities.
Hawaii Federal Jobs - Hawaii Government Jobs
government satellite communications operator jobs
https://www.usajobs.gov/

Hope this helps. Best of luck.
