A constantly working mason/carpenter/plumber/electrician etc. can easily afford their own home.

I confess I didn't watch the video. Why? Because it shows a highrise HOA guy. Of course he's going to be against more building. He already has his condo in a highrise, he just doesn't want more people with the same around him.

(I WILL watch the video later)
Its so much more then him talking ok. Please do i found it informative.

Depends on whether his information is accurate. Most of this stuff isn't

Well, Kakaako sure has been changing, hasn't it? Traffic is already a mess there, but perhaps the folks will take the bus or walk to where ever they are going, it is a nice central location. If you work in Waikiki and live in Kakaako, you could easily bicycle to work. Or probably walk within a half hour.

However, Hawaii's minimum wage is $7.75 per hour and they are putting the "low income" studio rentals at around $900 to $1,000. So, full time minimum wage minus about 12% for taxes is about $1K per month plus or minus. At $10 per hour, the take home would roughly be $1,400 a month, so a $10 per hour worker could just barely maybe think about making ends meet, but it would be hand to mouth. Basically, you'd need a couple people sharing a studio in order for them to have anything resembling a comfortable income to rent ratio.

If one is making minimum wage or even making $10/hour which is a very small subset of the working population, then living in your own studio in a luxury high-rise condominium is probably not something one should expect.

It looks like Hawaii has 15,000 at or below minimum wage. Which is a much smaller number than I would have guess.

States with the Most Minimum-Wage Workers

I do think we would be at the top of the states based on homes with the most people living there.

With 7% of households having liquid assets above $1,000,000 (which means excluding retirement funds and real estate) you'd have a better chance of being in a millionaire household than a minimum wage household given there are about 400,000 households in Hawaii.

According to HUD, a single person in Honolulu County has a median income of $67,100 (over $30/hour) and a family of four a median of $95,800

According to the Census

Median household income, 2009-2013 $72,764
Persons below poverty level, percent, 2009-2013 9.8%

Far below what you hear from officals when there talking affordable housing which is often families have to make $100,000 or more to be eligible.

Honolulu County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

@Colonel Domo

You do know that it doesn't matter if its condos for the rich or affordable housing for the working class or below? That they all get subsidized by taxpayers and the goverment in Hawaii in one form or another?

@whtviper1, Mikala43

I think its easy for someone to look at your stats and have there eyes bulge out $30hr wow thats alot, not realising that the COL in Honolulu are by far the most expensive. Most are not aware that a gal of milk in some areas in Honolulu can be upto $8 at times plus Get tax and income taxes etc. I believe you don't give a complete picture.

I think my picture, my view of the situation you may say, is much wider than yours, much more hands-on, more interactive and of greater clarity.

Just my opinion.

Back to the topic. I think the re-development of Kakaako is mostly good, I like that they are trying to turn that area into a "walking" community with the mix of living, retail and outdoor activity. It's what I love about San Francisco and other communities like that.
