The plan is to move from Anchorage (Eagle River), Alaska to Oahu, Hawaii in mid January 2016. I plan to sell as much as I can including the vehicles because it seems way too expensive to ship. I would like to take as little as possible utilizing the cheapest method.
Any suggestions on how to move would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
If it's just household goods why not just replace them from Goodwill/ Sally's or look on Craigslist? Also try good old USPS.
We will get rid of about 80% of "stuff" if possible, but will still have some stuff left over, clothes, sentimental items, some other we items cant sell unless we take a huge loss on.
We do plan to sell most, if not all our furniture on Craigslist and replace it the same way. When we moved to Alaska we did just that.

I've lived in Hawaii and I currently live in the bush. You are going to take a huge hit whether or not you sell or mail.
Seriously, it may just be better to take the loss and start all over. Flat rate and parcel post were our friends when we moved from East coast to the bush and from one bush village to another bush village.
Alaskan Airlines has the most luggage you can haul along with at the lowest rates, I think. For basic packages, USPS is about the least expensive. UPS & FedEx are horrendously expensive. There is/was a "media rate" with the post office for things like books and such. But if some sort of non-media is in the box (they occasionally look) then they will charge the higher rate.
Check to see if there's a freight forwarder in Alaska. With those folks, you give them your packages and they consolidate them and ship them at a lower rate than as individual packages. If you can get your stuff to the lower 48, there's freight forwarders and consolidators in Oakland for certain and I'd also expect them up around the Seattle area, too. You may be able to ship via train (is there a train from Anchorage to Seattle?) and then load onto a ship.
Ocean freight is the cheapest for heavy items, but more expensive if you go by volume. If you're shipping potatoes, use ocean freight. If you're shipping potato chips, then use air freight.
But, dump as much stuff as possible and replace once you get to the islands.
Did u move? I went to Mililani High for a little over a year. Not sure if ur job is paying but bring what u have. Some furnished places but u pay more. And the stuff could be gross. U want it to look like home you know. But if ur going to move again in a year or so travel light. Then u gotta pay for storage. All tough calls. Just look ahead and plan ahead. I wish u luck
