I noticed the State is continuously are gathering applications. Does anyone one know what the government (not private sector) culture is with regard to hiring a mainlander with several years government social service experience and an educational attainment that exceeds the minimum for these openings? Obviously a crash course in all things Hawaii family culture would be in order...but beyond that does anyone have any thoughts? Mahalo

Aloha

I work for the state as a correctional supervisor for almost 27 yrs. Most state jobs requires you fill out an application. After the application is processed you will be given a date for testing and the requirements needed. All those who pass the this will receive notification of passing and then will be scheduled for interviews. Then they hire for the most times the most qualified applicants.

This process is time consuming and takes a while before you actually start the job.

The other way to get a state job is if you know someone in one of the departments and they can get you in as a temp hire and then work from the inside to get a job.

Check out the human resource center online (sorry i dont know the link) and they will have a listing of all the vacant jobs available and requirements. Please bear in mind that the State of Hawaii likes to hire within the work force before they hire new people.

Hope this helps you.

thanks! Make sense, as promoting from within is fair and reasonable. I just wondered if they tossed new folks applications out, but given there is an exam someone coming from the outside could stand a chance.

The State has also jobs that requires a college deg. Military exp can be use for the the testing. i think its 5 points preference. Downside is pay is not comparable to that on the mainland and the cost of living in hawaii is high.
