HI. Can anyone give me any suggestions for finding a position in the social services area? I have had a lot of past experience working with seniors as well as doing work with families as a case worker.
Are all the jobs for social workers located in Honolulu or are they scattered through-out the island?
Is it necessary to have a Masters Degree in Social Work here or can a Bachelors Degree plus years of experience suffice?
If you want to get into the Public sector There is the Dept. of Human Services..one unit is located on King Street in Honolulu and there are a few other stations.
I visited the one on King street years ago with a Law Enforcement Unit from NJ..At the time only a BA in Social Work was required, things might have changed..
I think you had to take and pass a Civil Service test for some of the positions, but others were non-Civil Service. http://humanservices.hawaii.gov/
If you start working for the state, expect a salary in the 40-50k range at best, unless you're a sup.
True dat..but a pension, medical, dental, prescription package are usaully included, plus paid sick, personal days, bereavement days, and paid vacation days, plus a 35 hr. work work..
Oh, I forgot, Memorial Day, Presidents Day, Easter, Christmas, Martin Luther King Day, New Years Day, Labor Day, day after Thanksgiving...all paid days...
Civil Service..Maternal ...
did I mention pension?
Can't beat it with a bat. :-)
I am a supervisor of a program on the Big Island and I am looking for social worker types and therapists on Hilo Side. Let me know if you are interested!

like I said...things have probably changed..but the work week was from 8:30 - 4:30 ..one hour for lunch..and two 15 minute breaks..
oh, and on payday Friday's..you got a free 1/2 hour unofficial check cashing time.
Sure, if you don't mind contributing 10% of your salary and not worry about it is less than 60% funded - expect more changes to the fund since it will run out of money.

I think it's a lot higher for cops and firefighters, like almost 15%.
That's one reason why I kinda don't get people that complain about the cost of the pension thing. The employees themselves contribute a lot, like 10% of their salary or whatever. If they work like 30 years, they'll get 60% or something of their final salary. And they have to pray the money will be there and the state doesn't mismanage and raid the fund, which they've been doing over the past 30 years. If you look at the all the money that was swiped from the fund dating back to the 70s, had that been invested today, the shortfall would be much smaller, if not non-existent.
So True...pension funds raided..financially mismanaged..Counties, municipalities, short falling or making No payments into the fund at all..
times have changed...I took an early retirement from my LEO job..at age 55.. My pension contribution was 12-14% of my salary.
....buyout was offered..I got 3 years of work time added towards my pension..plus they bumped my job title up..adding even more...retirement pension is based on highest three years of pay...
So, they made me. and 43 of my colleagues in NJ law enforcement positions happy people..
Fat pension, full medical, dental prescription coverage, COLA raises ceased after 5 years when big fat, fat fat, greasy sweaty lipped Guv. Christie came into office..but still enough to boost my yearly pension substantially..
I know I am probably pissing some people off here.....but more insult to injury must be added..
My medical coverage switches to Medicare PLUS Aetna when I turn 65,, at that point the fee for Medicare..about 120 bucks a month will be reimbursed to me by contractual agreement between my Union and the State doled out in a bi-annual check.
Off topic, I know..but choosing a Guv'mint job over private industry worked for me..
according to the stats My proactive, Investigative unit of 9 people saved the State of Zoo Jersey 62 Million dollars in a 7 year period by eliminating white collar, medicaid, welfare fraud, as well as criminal and Immigration crime..
I think we earned our pensions..
I like to post this info for no other reason but to provoke people in Private Industry who looked upon down and are now pissed about the people who chose the the Civil Service route ..
Eat your heart out! :-)
directly upon my retirement, I took a job at a major Insurance Co. in NJ..setting up surveillance teams to watch, report, and expose people collecting Disabilty bennies from the Company while claiming helplessness, but playing golf, working out, working a side job , sporting a handicapped parking sticker..
I lov to bust these people ..love to watch their faces as we roll the vids of them after they deny they were doing no wrong...
