looking at bulletin boards in the condos themselves are also a good way to find rentals. especially for the ones being rented by owners and (hopefully) a bit cheaper.

NEVER rent without seeing the place and the neighborhood! A lot of scams are on CL, so, beware. Wait until you get there or have a trusted friend look into it. Never send money in advance. This goes not only to Hawai'i, but anywhere. Remember, if it sounds to good to be true, it's a scam.

Agreed. Craiglist is pretty much gold in Hawaii. On the mainland you could use a website like apartmentguide.com.

If you use that website for Hawaii you would get like only 3 apartment complexes to search for.

For the OP, if you want a really nice place to rent then tell the landlord you'll be there for several years. Landlords obviously want long term tenants and they'll give you priority over all the other tenants who also want the place

Good point. A ton of scammers on craiglist so you have to wait to see the place and landlord in person. They throw the "please wire me money so I can reserve the place for you." And it will be a copy/pasted fake picture with an insanely low price.

^^^^^^Agreed. I live in a small town on the mainland which also relies heavily on CL.
