So - we decided to rent a place in Hawaii Kai marina (hope it was not a mistake), and the very first night we will stay in Waikiki. House has a pool, so I think we will spend a lot of time just being lazy, but planning to take day trips to the beach, and also do some sightseeing.
Apart from some "obvious" tourist places to visit - what are your top three places (maybe hidden gems), where you would have taken your visitors?

Thank you!

I don't think you will be unhappy with the Hawai'i Kai Marina area. My brother has lived there for decades.

Wish you hadn’t rented an illegal residence.

Do you by chance know what would be the closest beach to Hawaii Kai marina with good sand to play in and good swimming conditions?

Maybe Kahala Beach park. Nice area, if you can find parking.

Be very, very careful at Sandy’s beach. The waves get people into trouble there. Talk to the lifeguards first if you go.

Makapu'u Beach is not far from your base at Hawai'i Kai...up Kalanianaole Hwy.
The tide pools below the beach would be good place for the Kiki
to get their toes in the water.
Maybe some snorkeling for you.

Speaking of sunrises, try to get to Lanikai and see the sign rise over the Mokes. Just be respectful and careful where you park, they have strict parking rules.

The actual hidden gems aren’t places I would tell people to go without me. Mostly because of safety reasons. But top three items for that corner of the island and in town:

1. Manoa Falls.
$5 to park near the trail head. Bring Mosquito Repellant and don’t eat Bannas that morning (attracts them). 2mi hike in lush rainforest. Cute little shop at the trail head and some snacks too. Can be muddy if it rained, but there is a hose at the bottom to wash shoes. We always bring a bag and slippers to change into.

2. Diamond Head Hike
Wear shoes, bring water, wear sunscreen. Relatively easy hike with a huge reward at the top.

3. Hanauma Bay
Chill beach in a volcanic crater. You have to watch a video prior to going down, but it’s actually pretty cool. Food vendor at the top, pay shuttle down or can walk. You can snorkel there, but mostly only see fish, the reef is pretty brown. For swimming and chilling, it’s a great beach with facilities and lifeguards.

Good that you found a place. Please make sure that you spend a full day at the Polly Center (Polynesian Center) Really a great place to spend some time, and great for the kids. Make sure you go to the live show and the luau that they have. Both great to do. Research it online. If you have a military connection, you can get good discount tickets for the event.
