So many things. When I was younger and went to Hawaii, I really disliked Honolulu and Waikiki. Maui and Kauai were what I thought it should be like. But there is a certain magic to Honolulu. The bustling of tourists (such great people watching), shopping (love both Ala Moana Mall and all along Kalakaua Avenue), the restaurants that have such diversity in food, the gorgeous hotels that you can walk through, the gorgeous view walking along Diamond Head to Kahala, Sunday’s at Dukes, Ala Moana Beach Park, Magic Island and the great views from Magic Island to Downtown and Waikiki Beach. The “I’m on vacation vibe”, great boat rides from Kewalo Basin. It’s part of that beautiful place called Hawaii, and I love the islands so much I think I can find joy in just about every place there. The only problem is I don’t live there. 😭
Spend your Halloween night in Waikiki. Everyone dresses up for trick and treat including most tourists. I still recalled years ago I saw many young Japanese female tourists dressed up as Bunny Girls. A local guy wore trench coat and whenever he encountered the Bunny Girls, he exposed himself and all the Japanese girls screamed.
But don't drive into Waikiki. The traffic is really terrible that evening until 2 or 3 a.m.
For me it is a simple pleasure that I cannot get when I'm on the mainland: Sitting along the ocean in shorts and a t-shirt watching the sun set while a warm breeze floats by rustling the palms. And it's DECEMBER !!!
PS, there are no "cities" in the state of Hawaii. I believe it is the only state in the U.S. without any separate incorporated cities.
Perhaps the official seal of the City and County of Honolulu - should be changed to, Not a City and County of Honolulu?
