The Waimanalo Beach Park area that Manoagirl talks about, with the homeless, is further down the beach (near the 72 on this map):

41-923 Laumilo Street, Waimanalo, HI - Google Maps

That pier in the photo - is that the famous, or infamous, "Island Hoppers" pier where T.C. kept his helicopter and waited for Magnum to ask another favor?

When I was living in Hawaii Kai, and working on affordable housing in Waimanalo, I'ld drive by that pier every day, would also dirve by "Robins Nest", the location for a lot of the filming for Magnum PI, walled in semi-mansion with a blue tiled roof, and, right on the other side of Kalanianiole Highway, some fairly broken down Hawaiian homes.

Aloha

Perhaps you did not find a lot of information on Waimanalo was because it is not a highly recommended area for people who are coming straight from the mainland. If you pick the right area to live in your experience on Oahu can be most pleasant. If you pick the wrong area you can run into some problems. Here are just a few areas that many people from the mainland enjoy: Hawaii Kai, Kahala, Manoa. There are others but those are probably the most popular. In my opinion I don't think it is such a good idea, and I hate to be the one to say "I told you so"!!! Even locals Haoles from the other side of the Island can have problems going to Waimanalo or Nanakuli.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't really know much about Waimanalo. Is it like Waianae? And you're right about even some locals haole's not going to Nanakuli.

To cut straight to the point Meth addiction is a serious epidemic in Waimanalo.
There are many different types of drug rehab programs available in the Waimanalo area for people addicted to Meth. The three most prominent types in Waimanalo are residential, inpatient and outpatient facilities. Sure you may be near the beach, or even live in a nice cottage but you should also consider the surrounding area.

Looks like Ill go back to looking in either Kailua, or Hawaii Kai. And I know someone is gonna pop in and defend Waimanalo and say that there are nice areas there and I am sure that there are BUT @2500/month I can do better than meth heads......
As always everyones help here is priceless well maybe except JungJo's......(just messing with you)

Ok, so in an attempt to get more opinions on this subject, I went ahead and compared crime stats from where I live now which is Tempe, AZ to Waimanalo and well where I am at now shows to be extremely higher. Guess my concern is that I never would have guessed Tempe was bad. So maybe in all fairness there is crime and drugs everywhere, it just depends on who you surround yourself with. If anyone lives in this area please chime in on what your experience has been in Waimanalo. As far as the rehad places go, well there rehab and isnt that atleast a step in the right direction?
