Aloha,

I have been planning a move to Honolulu from Fort Lauderdale. My only concern is the VOG on Oahu? I do not need feedback from the other Islands. Only Oahu!! My Aunt moved from the Big Island (Kailua-Kona) because the Vog was so bad!! I am hoping that the Vog is not that frequent on Oahu. Any input will help. Mahalo!!

VOG only happens here occasionally...like maybe a few times a year. Our "tradewinds" blow strong (10-15mph) from the east on most days, so if the volcanoes are active, Oahu does get VOG. I am an allergy sufferer, but VOG doesn't affect me too much. My eyes burn a little and sometimes I get a sore throat or an upset stomach. But really I would not consider it something to worry about at all in consideration of your move.

Agree with fshngrl, Oahu Vog is usually a non-issue.

So far.

I did a search and decided to resurrect this thread. What in the world??? I've never had allergy issues and I spent 25+ years in a place where they broadcast via cropduster insecticide, exfoliant and whatever it is that causes the cotton bolls to pop open. The bovine miscarriage rate is higher in the midsouth than anywhere. I admit to some sinus issues but no allergies.

This VOG is kicking my .... tailfeathers. I guess I'll keep on with the severe sinus and allergy meds and take an occasional sick day (like today) C'mon trade winds!!!!!

Any tricks to combating the affects or protecting oneself from vog?

Mahalo!

Which island are you on, hunterseat?

Very sorry you're having a rough time with it.

I'm on Oahu. Just slept 4hrs and I'm feeling a lot better. I can feel my nose gearing up, though. Windows are open and breeze is blowing through. Hmmm.... maybe air conditioning...$$$.

my only relief has been taking a hot shower to clear the nose and napping a bit. other than that i'll stay indoors with all the windows closed and ac on. but there have been days where letting the dogs out will trigger my allergies.

A lot of people find some relief from using a nasal wash or sinus irrigation of some kind. The old standby in health food stores was the neti pot, but modern squeeze bottle systems are more convenient to use. And mainstream pharmacies carry them now.

We had two notable VOG attacks in our year on Oahu. They are mostly a nuisance but you shouldn't take them lightly. When you can SEE the VOG, you should plan an indoor day, I think. I started having a cough and rough throat that wouldn't go away. My doc said VOG exacerbates whatever you have going on and it could take three months to clear it up. (It took me a month.)

The VOG has kicked my butt a bit too in the last month. But my daughter, who had sever asthma on the mainland, is fine.
