Do any of you have experience in getting a federal government job in Oahu? My active duty husband, who does acquisition and contracting for the Army, will retire in 2010 as a Major. He will have finished 20 years (prior enlisted, then field artillery, and now contracting).

I wonder how difficult it would be for him to get hired at for example, Fort Shafter, Schofield Barracks, or the other military installations on the island. He is most qualified in the contracting/acquisition field, but is willing to do most jobs, hopefully at a GS-11 or higher. Thanks.

I would think he has a good as chance as anyone else. All federals jobs are posted on this website:

All I can say it takes time, and your husband should start applying for jobs right about now. My husband tried to get a GS job sometime ago. He didn't hear anything until he was about 6 months into his new job, then the invitation for interviews started to pour. Every 3 months or so, he still receives emails from HR or potential bosses, asking if he was still interested in the jobs he applied 2 years ago!

He'll have an easier time of it with his veteran's preference, so that's good! I work as a contractor for the Navy here in Hawaii, and it's hard to get a GS job without that preference.

For the AD Navy, the Fleet and Family Support Center has resume specialists to help them get a Federal style resume together in advance of getting out. I'm guessing the Army has the same program with a different title - has he checked into that?
