Default Schofield Barracks housing

My husband just got orders for an 8 month temporary assignment at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, HI. It is an unaccompanied assignment but we were wondering if anyone knows what the temporary housing is like there?

It's just like a low to medium-end motel, located a few hundred feet from Division Headquarters, basically in the middle of post.

Not bad. Of course there's better, but it's pretty convenient. Schofield is not actually near Honolulu, it's near Wahiawa and Mililani right in the middle of the island.

Walking distance from the life support stuff like the PX, Commissary, gym, etc.:

The Inn at Schofield Barracks

If there's no room at the Inn (heh...), they can stamp orders allowing him to stay at an off-post hotel up to a certain dollar limit...e.g., he won't be in a 5-star.

There are smaller apartments available in Wahiawa - Kemoo by the Lake, lower Wahiawa area, and even the possibility of apartments in Mililani.

For such a short tour, I don't think the command would give up housing allowance - and the COLA will not be boosted with you being here - and if you look for work to supplement the income... well... you'd be suffering. (got this from military friends)

Unless you can hook-up with someone over here, it may not be worth your while.

Hotel stay for the military would be Hale Koa (the military hotel) in Waikiki (which has discounted rates for military members based on rank) - but that is a bit for a commute for hubby to get up to Schofield (which is smack dab center of the island).

Scour Craigslist for sublets or rentals in Wahiawa, Mililani and Pearl City. You could probably also look for short term rentals in Waipahu, Waikele and there are some who do short-term rentals to military in Waialua.

If you do decide to come out here with hubby, let him come first, find a place, then you come. Will take the stress out of hunting and save you $$ in the long run.

If given the choice I would stay at SB vs Wahiawa.

Not sure if you've left yet, but will post my reply.

My husband was TDY to SB last year for a training exercise. He had the option of staying on SB, but we stayed at the Marriott in Waikiki with our toddler. I went to SB every few days to wash and food shop. Hubby took the rental car everyday, but I found city bus transportation to be just fine on the days when I didn't want to drop hubby at work.

Hubby has been applying for jobs in HI, so I hope we can move there in a few months.

lilgoldie- there is a wait for housing, depending what you qualify for (O or E, and # of bedrooms), the wait may be longer or shorter. You can actually apply to Army, Navy and Air force housing. Military will ship one POV, you have to pay out of pocket for the 2nd.
