So what happens in Ocala during Hurricane season? (Orlando, Inverness: motels, mobile home)

I'm a New Yorker for the next 16 days- then I will be a Floridian. I can honestly say I can do snow- I hate snow, but I can drive in a snow storm, ice storm, whatever. I know nothing about hurricanes other than what you see on the news and what I have learned here so far. I know that they affect mostly only coastal regions. So we will be living in Ocala....what happens there when the coast is getting pummeled with a hurricane? Does it ever go that far inland? I know I probably sound like a 6th grader with an F in earth science, but in my defense...I did in fact fail earth science. I was an art major

During the past couple of canes, we got nothing more than wind and rain... much like a good thunder storm with some power outages up north

Great! Thats what I was hoping for We are all set with our paperwork, btw! We were supposed to be leaving NY 7/5 but we may be heading down 6/30 instead!

The weather rarely gets THAT bad here. Just Hot, but heck, it is the South!! LOL

Were in Inverness and the most we got was tropical strength winds but we also haven't got a hurricane come by us in a long time so i would say depending on the strength of the hurricane and how fast it's moving depends on what will happen inland. Just keep in mind, even though a hurricane is not in your path, the tornados tend to appear on the outer edges which may reach inland even though the storm is spinning over the water still so just be prepared and listen to the news. You'll learn real quick what to expect in your area by the forecasters.

Hurricane Charley did quite a bit of damage in Orlando too, but it's nothing like what the coasts get. Plus that was pretty much the only damaging hurricane to hit Central Florida in 40 years. Not much to worry about!

The hurricanes in 2004 did quite a bit of damage in Marion county. My mother in laws mobile home was basically all but destroyed. We had to evacuate here in Dunnellon ( we also live in a mobile home). In fact, the hurricanes are a major factor in our decision to move out of Florida along with the fact that the only way we could ever afford a house in this state is through Habitat for Humanity. Four years ago we would have had a chance to actually get into a house that we like. Not anymore.

We are seriously hoping to go to a state where we can have a house with a basement that we can afford.

The motels fill up. It becomes more congested than usual. Where do you think all of those people living on the coast go?
