Just curious if most people that live in Ocala find themselves in Orlando or Tampa on the weekends for fun? I know Ocala is a smaller town with fewer things to do from what I am told.

Default Orlando or Tampa on weekends

There is not much of a weekend night life here in Ocala, although the downtown area has been undergoing a major revitalization, and attracting more bistros, upscale restaurants, etc., and a younger, more affluent, educated crowd.

Beyond Ocala, yes, there is Orlando(geenerally horrible traffic) and Tampa, but also Melbourne, Sarasota, Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, Fort Lauderdale

Don't forget Gainesville which has an abundance of bars, clubs, cultural activities, etc., due to the influx of students from U. of F., as well as medical staffers from Shands Hospital, and the U. of F. Hospitals. Gainesville is much closer, easier to get to and around, less traffic congestion, and generally a much hipper crowd. This is my first choice for a fun night(or weekend) away from Ocala.

Explore Gainesville and all it has to offer for weekend fun...you won't be disappointed, and won't have to travel so far.

Thanks for the Gainesville idea! I just figured all of the college students there would turn me off. We are in our 30s with a family. Do you think Gainesville is nice for family fun as well?

Default Weekend in Central Florida

Glad you're considering Gainesville. While it does not have all that Disney- and Sea World-type entertainment, it does offer a broad spectrum of entertainment venues...depending upon what you've looking for...for all age ranges. It will certainly have an abundance of night-life for the college crowd, but since you're in your 30's, then certainly you'll fit in fine. There are a lot of nature trails, butterfly exhibitions, parks, on and on.

As I first indicated above, Gainesville is much closer, easier to get to/from, and will certainly cost you less to do whatever, than some of the other choices.

Have fun. Glad to help.

Default one more thing...

The Villages, about 30 minutes or so South of Ocala, is a 55+ community, with a Disneyland-theme for seniors. Lots of amenities, entertainment, etc. They do have free entertainment on their 2 village squares, nightly. A couple of really great "oldies" rock bands(Rockin'Robin) that put on a great, free show, with lots a people of all ages dancing and having a blast!

Need to check-out their entertainment schedule.
