Belle Glade like many small towns has problems. It's job base is in fact agricultural. Development and tourism have hit the coast of Palm Beach County but not that area.
It's just a small town with some nice neighborhoods and not so nice neighborhoods. Changes in the agricultural industry and the 3 hurricanes that have hit have made things harder. I will grant you it's not a beautiful town in many respects.
However, it's not a "shanty town" whatever that is. There are grocery stores, a community college campus, hospital, restaurants, golf course, cultural arts theater, etc.
"Poor migrants" are not forced to live in shanties. Actually the sugar cane industry due to many law suits is now mostly mechanical. There are field workers that help harvest the food you eat. They earn a decent wage and are not mistreated.
It's one thing to say a town is not beautiful, but it's another to spread mis-information based on your prejudices.

Pahokee is a Pit
Sorry Kids.
I've traveled all over Florida and I have yet to see ANY place that is Pahokee's equal for squallor. Less than 6000 people live there, the crime rate is through the roof and quality of life does not exist. 13 year old girls having their second kid by an unknown father, stores boarded up and gone or selling crap goods at obscene prices because A.) There is no competition B.) They have to make up for the cost of all the shop-lifting. Their city government is SO bad they had to disband the police and "former" gang-members routinely win elected positions. I'm not sure if I can use the proper words to describe the "business" currently operating in a residential neighborhood (across the street from my parents). But "House of Ill-Repute" is much too classy for the joint. Apparently the ladies their are paid in a certain substance that resembles rock salt and is smoked. The "farmers" that own land there are wealthy, live in Wellington and collect checks from the local Sugar Co-Op. All their vast wealth comes from government price supports for sugar arranged by a vast corporate farmer lobbyist network. Come to that the Feds support most of the residents of Pahokee through various programs. If you drive through roll your windows up, lock your doors and if you have a gun, make sure you have a round jacked into breech. Welcome to Pahokee - Failed Government Experiment in Social Intervention

Anywhere that the percentage of high school graduates falls below 50% is telling. There is alot of that in Florida.

Don't forget that cities have polar opposit areas in florida....in Orlando, you can live in Winter Park, and feel like you are in a little wrigleyville, with the older buildings, botiques, and such. Theater, restaurants, and all make it a very pleasant neighborhood to walk through at night.....on the other hand, the crib part of Orlando is frightening. In Fort Lauderdale, you can enjoy the breeze in the winter evenings past high-end open-air restaurants, and feel safe as can be in Los Olas, or, farther inland, stand next to a cat-walk style sec.8 apartment building.......its all on what side of the fence you are standing on...thats all...I'd rather be rich in Ft. Lauderdale than anywhere else if I had the money. How can you beat a canal system that is the "road" to your mansion? Also impossible to break in, as only one road in and out that is narrow. I'll take it!

The Nomination Goes to..........
I nominate my own city.....Pensacola
Having lived and travled all over the U.S., P'cola is by far the ugliest city of a decent size that I have ever been in. There were not really any zoning laws here until the 70's, so what dows that get you? Over crowded roads, mansionis next to trailers and run down buildings in the middle of a thriving comercial area. Also, the fact that our city goverment is completely corrupt does not help matters at all. P'cola is for the most part, a very trashy place.
